Break off a small piece from an Aloe plant and smear it on, you'll be surprised.

Poorly fitting hiking boots Paul. Were they new?

Agree. Also, make sure you cover that with some moleskin before you go to work Paul. You need to protect that tender tissue so that it can heal.

Congrats on the 13 miles! Nice hike.

Wow Paul, that looks sore! I'd chill today, feet up, maybe tune in to some US Open, let the air get at it today and treat with polysporin

LOL, Polysporin. That was our family's remedy for just about anything when I was a kid. Well, that and Bactine. Spritz with Bactine, rub some Polysporin on it, and cover it with a bandaid.

That looks pretty bad but I think a DSSD would cover it.

I'm not a hiker and if that's what my feet would look like after 15 miles, I'm glad I'm not.

I would also try the Aloe, and get yourself better fitting shoes.

In spite of the way your feet look, I'm impressed.

Wow, that's the mother of all blisters!

Where did you hike? I've done various hikes in San Diego, El Cajon Mountain is one that could have done that to you

Oh and here's my suggested cure:

Try sock liners on your next hike.

If you already have blisters and want to keep going, I second the duct tape recommendation.

Many thanks I set a goal for myself of 13 miles and it was tough as hell but am pretty proud that I did it. My goal is 15 prior to the fall, and 20 by the end of the year (when it's cooler). Right now I am just happy I made it 13, not bad for a 55 year old

Oh and here's my suggested cure:
It was the Cuyamacca mountains, up around the lake and to around 5,000 feet.

JOCKE!!!!! Jocke! Next time you are coming with me!!!!

So, here is the story with the blisters and my boots. They are relatively new, and I actually not only cover that area of my ankle with "new skin," I wrap a gauze bandage around it for extra protection. The thing is....

Many many years ago, I had several surgeries on my ankle, without going in to details it's a miracle I can hike at all and don't walk with a severe limp. Anyway... If you looked at my legs, you would see my right one looks exceptionally "different" then my left, and there is a huge bulge at the back of my right ankle. From what I understand it is scar tissue and reconstructive plastic staples. Now, my old boots were 100% leather, and they seemed to conform to the bulge rather quickly and I didn't have any issues. My NEW ones are Gortex, and whatever the inside is made of, it doesn't seem to "give," hence the blisters.

Besides cutting a whole in the back of my boot (which I am not going to do) does anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking about trying to file-down the inside of the boot liner to give more room(?) I really don't know. They are a full size larger then I normally wear and with the exception of that one spot feel comfortable, protect and support my feet and ankles, and are perfect. Abdullah, you are the medic, let's have some medicining!

I am open for suggestions....

I wouldn't cut up the shoe. The reinforcement is plastic and will destroy your foot if you expose it.

My advice is if it works, don't fix it. You had a good pair of boots. Why not get a new pair of those. Do you really need Gore-Tex (is it that wet there)?

Love to, but they don't make that model any more, and the reason I went with the Gore-Tex is not due to moisture, but weight, these things are like feathers on my feet compared to my old boots. I COULD start the whole process of trying to find a different manufactures model of leather boots, but that is a nightmare, the only way to know for sure is hiking with them for several miles on a hot day (when your feet swell). I am so comfortable with the Vasque (manufacturer) boots I really wanted to stay within their line up. And these boots are perfect, except for that one spot; my deformed ankle. Aggggghhhhh....

Paul, when I said Aloe I didn't mean for you to go out and buy some Aloe lotion or other man made crap.

You have to break off a piece of an Aloe plant and smear that on your foot.

Trust me, I've done it more times then I remember and it works wonder.

Impressive hike!

Dang Paul that looks painful! Are you sure that those shoes fit right? I could see this result if they were new. I trust you have good socks too. I would go to REI and work with them to get you into a shoe that works for your feet.

PS- Thanks for not showing your toes in the picture.
