Nautilus and the Royal Oak : real world comparison

Fortunate to now have two of the most iconic models out there the Royal oak and the Nautilus.

I've read countless threads of this versus that and thought I'd give my two cents.

First of all the are very different watches. They are similar in some ways but VERY different.

1) The case - the Nautilus is very subtle in design with smooth curves and a low profile. The Royal oak is more pronounced and has more presence.

2) The dial - the Nautilus dial almost disappears into the background and makes an appearance when you notice the colour changes into a different shade of blue or does a sunburst effect . The Royal oak dial is much more decorated with the waffle pattern and grooves.

3) The bracelet - the Royal oak is bling bling. Loads of angles and light reflecting polish. The Nautilus is subtle compared to the Royal oak with a very smooth finish. Both very very comfortable.

4) Clasp - AP Clasp is very easy to open. Too easy even simple double sided press and it pops off. The Nautilus feels more secure but is harder to take off.

5) Movement - both very good. The Nautilus feels more decorated /larger ( dont know the dimensions) The AP has a nicer rotor with the engraving.

Overall all I can say is that they are very different watches. They don't feel the same on the wrist nor do they look similar to each other at all.

Good write up and incredible pics.

What RO reference is that, please?

Great review and tremendous duo. I have a 5711 blue, often regret selling my 15202 white dial

If I am you, I'll flip the AP and add a bit more to get the 40th anniversary 15202. Just a suggestion.

Great comparison.

Both great watches but I prefer the AP bracelet. The one on the PP reminds me somewhat of designs from an older era.

Excellent post. I've tried both, although never owned either. I can honestly say though, that wearing that PP was a truly nice feeling: when you have that on your wrist you know you are wearing something special.

Everything about the craftmanship and details is pristine, and yet the watch is completely understated all at the same time...

Love it!

I think both nice watches but don't understand the different baton colours on the AP. I thought PP was lazy with dial and metal changes but this takes the cake!

Both have a brushed finished bezel and both have a contrasting polished bevel. I agree with you in the sense that the royal oak comes off as a warrior ready to pounce, with its exposed screws and sharper edges, the bracelet feels like armour and its individually polished links really gives it a pronounced 3D appearance.

The Nautilus is the gentleman, its edges are more smoothed out, and its lines impeccably cut like a seville row suit. it wears like it was meant to be integrated with your arms, the feeling is almost transhuman.

The dials, AP opts for a tapiserrie dial with immaculate contrasting finishes, taking in the light and create subtle changes of colour. Like a warrior it portrays little but deep emotions.

The Nautilus however, is far more sensitive to light, a turn of the watch will see sun rays of light blue glistening from the dial. It is a bit more eccentric, like a baby blue silk pocket square on a light grey three piece suit.

Anyway, thats how I feel when I am wearing my two boys.

This was a special commissioned piece by a company. The colours in the front and back are the company colours.

Very nice review and great photos!

I have to say that at first I did not appreciate the Genta design. With time, it had grown on me and now I am fantasizing to get an AP jumbo. My wife does not like it and anytime I show it to her (either being in photo or in a window) she say NO. However, I have never tried one on... She had a similar reaction to the Reverso but now she wants one...

All this being said, I have seen a couple of PP Nautilus in the wild and I think they look much better in person but the more edgy design of the AP is more inspiring to me.

Thanks. They do take some time to get into. The Patek is very different in person. Fits like a glove.

Cool duo, have a 5712 coming in Tuesday, and a 5167R in October, am wanting to add one in 2017, but think it will be a 5711, did hesitate for a 15202 but really orefer the 5711, so I prefer to get what I love the most

I personally own both models from each brand but I believe they each have their own very charismatic "personalities" and it would be more fair to compare either both blue (PP+AP) or both white dials, very difficult to choose one over the other in my opinion ... Two Legends

Two great classics - the RO in white is quite sharp, and probably my favorite colorway.

I think my 3 favorite brands are Rolex, PP, and AP, and you have all your bases covered with very complimentary pieces my friend!
