Am I being a butthead?

I've got three Rolexes (one is for sale) and an Omega and the Rado, also for sale (but it's not looking promising for that one). I like nice watches.

My wife has a lovely Rado that I bought her about ten years ago. She is really tough on watches, beats them up, doesn't take care of them (i.e. cleaning them occasionally unless I do it) so the Rado was a good fit for her, as it is scratch-proof. This summer she saw a Rolex that she wants, and has made subtle hints like "I sure do like that Rolex" and "I've been looking at prices for that Rolex". I've also bought her a decent quartz designer watch, but she usually wears the Rado.

This morning she knocked the crystal off of the Rado.

I want her to have nice things (she already has the best husband!) but spending 5-6K on a watch that I know she will trash just bugs the crap out of me. Plus, she wears a fitbit on her left wrist, so we'll have that beautiful watch right next to a cheap plastic colored band. It's just...

I can buy a 7K watch for me, wear it for a while and sell it for 7K or close to that. So I consider it a rental fee. She'll never want to flip it, and even if she did, there isn't much of a market for women's watches as far as I can tell.

So, am I being a butthead? Or should I just chalk it up to the cost of being married, keeping her around to put with my crap, or am I justified in thinking that it's throwing away good money for someone who will likely destroy the watch before it needs a service?

Yes, you are being a Butthead... She is your wife and the fact that she doesn't baby her watches is not really a big deal since it comes back good as new after service.

Just buy it. What's the payoff if you don't? What's the upside for not getting her what she wants? You are already checked out on the concept of the rental fee so just go into it with the knowledge that the rental might be higher than you're used to on your wife's Rolex.

Yes. Stop thinking about your bank balance when it concerns your better half. At the end of the day it's only money and you must never forget the all important saying, happy wife, happy life. Buy it together to mark and occasion especially if it's her first Rolex and create a lasting memory. Enjoy it long enough and it may be a family heirloom.

I bought my wife a DJ midsize with pink dial and romans about 10 years ago. She has literally beaten the crap out of that watch. Scratches everywhere and the bracelet, for all intents and purposes, is shot.
Of course, I knew when I bought it that is how it would end up. I just thought it might take a little longer than 10 years.

She's equally rough on a car and it doesn't bother her in the slightest.

I will go a different angle. I agree with all the above. Added to that when my wife finally wanted and I bought her a nice Rolex this summer I found it makes me feel better as well that she finally has a nice watch and I don't feel as guilty having all my nice watches. Win, win, win.

Not uncommon. After a long search to find my wife a minty vintage 1002 last year. She wants a modern TT now....

My wife is hard on her new car, and equally as tough on the DJ I bought her when we got married, along with other jewelry she has received from me since then. That's her. She appreciates nice things and realizes she's fortunate to be able to have them, she's just not over the top about them like I am.

I keep my truck cleaner than most inside and out and although I wear one of my watches constantly, I'm more inclined to avoid things that will seriously scratch it or damage it cosmetically. That's just me.

I will buy her another Rolex some day and will continue to get her nice jewelry, not because she asks for it or expects it in any way, but because I enjoy doing it. Furthermore, most (not all) women are less likely to complain or put up a fight about your purchases or expenditures on expensive hobbies when they too get to enjoy some nice things as well. Just my own experience, and opinion.

I bought a Rolex for my wife in 1990 for the very reason she's hard on watches.
She wore it up to about three years ago, sold to expand her business.
Let her wear one of my vintage Accutrons and it didn't hold up.
When able she will get another Rolex.

Yes, so buy it but buy it at a good discount from a trusted seller or LNIB.

My wife is the same way and some days she doesn't even set the time on the watch and the date is never correct. It makes her happy so that's all that matters.

Yes you are. But it's totally understandable and justified. That said you know you're going to do it anyway so just roll with it. Just enjoy how happy it makes her and don't worry about what it looks like after a few weeks. Plus you seem correct in that the used market for women's watches is softer do you know it's going to take a heavy hit even if it's pristine so let her enjoy it without worrying about the resale.
