Winding Question - Vintage OP
I have the watch pictured below. Purchased by my father in 1970. He gave it to me about 20 years ago, and I haven't worn it in about 5 years, since I got my Sub-C.
Pulled it out tonight, put it on my wrist and it started right up. I want to give it a full wind, but want to make sure I don't do it incorrectly. When I unscrew and pull out the crown, I can turn the crown counter-clockwise, and it gives a nice sound, if I try to turn it clockwise, there is resistance and I can hear things turning inside the watch. I have the receipt, warranty, COSC certificate, but not the manual. Can someone confirm that counter-clockwise is the proper way to manually wind, and how many turns it should get? Also, is it NOT possible to overwind, similar to my Sub-C? Any help is always greatly appreciated. |

No, CCW doesn't do anything except ratchet, that's why it feels like something is moving in the clockwise direction, it is.

I would not try wind it anymore. After sitting for so long the watch needs a service. Everything is dry inside, as I am sure you know.
Winding wise, it's the same as your Sub. Same direction. They are all the same.

So, I wore it for about 2 hours last night, tried to move my write around more than normal. Just put it on again now, 16 hours later and it was still running, and the time was spot on (to the minute, didn't check to the second).

That shows how good these watches are and that it's working condition....but the more it runs the more it hurts it. 5 years it's a long time.
Give it a service, it deserves it.

I have a 1680/8 sub that I have worn for over 40 years and I have never wound it. If it stops due to disuse, I simply shake it a while and it resumes running.

Could it be that the auto rotor is winding the movement but fine wear particles are causing drag on the winding plates and the rotor is turning when manually winding?
The ETA movement in my Ball Fireman II did this.
