Is it real? Dealer said "counterfeit"
Hi all,
I am not looking to sell this, or get it appraised by anyone here. I inherited it from my Dad and took it to the local Rolex dealer to find out about getting a link for the band and having it serviced. Their Rolex "guy" spent about 30 seconds looking at it, then told me it is a counterfeit. He said the dial is fake, and if he sent it to Rolex for service it would be confiscated. So a little help please for a guy that does not know anything about the Rolex world. Is it possible that it's a fake, even with the box and tags, and the serial numbers? Could the dial be fake and the rest of the watch be real? If it's a fake dial, can a real dial be put back on without the watch being confiscated by Rolex? Thanks for any help I can get on this. |

I'm not expert but it looks pretty legit to me. If it's a fake, it's a very good fake, at least to my naive eyes

If the dial is not real or maybe modified, Rolex will not confiscate the whole watch. They will only replace the dial and confiscate the old dial.
I can't help with the authentication. sorry.

This looks real to me. Nice barked centre links. The dial could be a retro fit with the diamonds etc. Take it to another AD and keep us posted.

All seems legit for this 1979 18078, except the dial as previously said (have a look to the following picture showing a genuine diamond dial for a 18078, diamonds are a lot differents). President bracelet 8723 and case have all the required stamps. Just check if the S/N between lugs at 6h is the same as on the green tag). Do you still have the warranty card ? if yes can you find on it a ref# in the form R180788xxB8723 ? that could help determine which dial was on the Watch initially. . |

Real watch with an aftermarket dial. Rolex won't confiscate it, but they won't service it either.
So many AD's speak from where the sun don't shine.

RSC won't just require a dial replacement to what it was born with? Or they won't touch it at all?

I think it looks great, the barked links are superb, it's a nice thing to have from your Dad.

Looks good to me. Maybe the dial is aftermarket. Have it serviced with an independent. Try Rik from Time Care Inc.

I'm inclined to say it is real too with an aftermarket dial. Mine has a tapestry dial it looks great with the bark.

Wow the dial looks way different than the posted authentic after. The markings, the lume, the diamonds. Everything.

the weight should be a dead giveaway insofar as authenticity. I'd look for another AD or work directly with RSC and tell them you want a new dial in addition to the link and service.

Yup the weight is telling, and it looks heavy and well hallmarked from here. Maybe dial is fake, I don't like the baguettes, but if so easily swapped out by RSC.

Hi, you may want to post it in the Vintage Rolex Discussion sub-forum so that your question gets the attention it deserves.

10000% real IMHO, dials are funny. Rolex used many makers for these. If anything is non-Rolex it could be the dial but 'big deal" Rolex could replace it or better yet find a champagne dial and send the watch to a high quality, respected independent watch maker.

Test the gold. If it's real I would say real lol.
It does look good though! Take it to an experienced watch maker to have serviced. I always hear SOMEONE having problems with an AD/service center. Very rarely do I hear complaints about watchmakers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
