DAYTONA 16520 L series

Hi there,

I have been offered this nice L Series 1989 but am not sure if this is a service dial or not.

Given it's a L Series, the dial seems to be missing OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED. Is that correct?


L Series is supposed to be floating or (COSMOGRAPH) printed with gap.

Seller told me that R Series is always floatitng, early L2 200 bezel floating, L3 225 bezel 4 liner not floating, L4 L5 only 225 with 4 liner.

Between this site and the DRSD site, and if you consider the information as gospel, it would appear your dial has been changed at some point. This would not be uncommon, for example, if someone purchased the watch with a black dial and preferred the white dial and changed it out.

What L Serial is the watch you have been offered?
It's a bit unclear from your information.

I had an L-427XXX serial sold in February 1990 which had the configuration of 4 line dial with 225 bezel.
From what I have read over the years, the L-serials had 200, 225 and regular 250 bezels.
The dials varied from 4 line (Officially Certified missing on the dial) to regular 5 line dials (Non-floating)

Nothing unusual looking about the dial, though the pic isn't too sharp. Bezel is a replacement.

Never heard of 4 line dials as service replacements. But wouldn't put it past Rolex to do so, either. Would just be highly unusual considering how short of a run the MK1 dials were made. By the time any R-series and early L-series likely made it to an RSC, the MK3 dials were already being sold.
