Over polished lugs?
Hi everyone, I've been a long time reader of the forum and finally purchased my first Rolex. It's a 1999 14060. I love it, but I'm looking at the lugs and thinking that it's been severely over polished (the spring bar protrudes at the 2:00 position). I paid $4,300 for the watch 10 days ago and I'm taking it to an authorized repair center tomorrow. If this was your watch what would you do? Return it? Keep it? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks! image uploader |

Does it have the correct "fat" spring bars? I purchased a 16710 recently and it had the incorrect , shouldered, spring bars which protruded on one side like that. I put in the correct spring bars and it resolved the issue (also stopped the end links from rattling).

Definitely overpolished. Was the condition disclosed prior to purchase? If not, return it.

Oh wow! Have you addressed it with the seller? I don't think there's much you can do with an overpolished case. I'm sure others will chime in.

Bit over polished for my liking as well. Good luck on how you choose to handle.

If you inspected it prior to purchase then it's yours?
If it was sold and wrongly described you may have a case but are they your pictures or the sellers?

Like I've told you on Absolutely James Bond, where you have posted it as well - also the lug at 7 is polished down to the bone ;)

Wow. That 2 o'clock lug looks like it's lost about a quarter of its original width, or more. Major surgery has been done on that watch.

While I'm no expert that lug looks quite over polished as well as the lug hole appears to be "bowled" out. If I were you and I had the option I'd return it. I don't know if you could even have that much of the case laser welded or not.
Make sure that the correct spring bars are installed and then go from there. Good luck.

Yes. Over-polished. That 7 o'clock lug has no contour left.

It only really matters if it bothers you. I would not have bought it, because it would bother me. Good luck and keep us posted

Whoever sold you that watch for $4300 did cartwheels after you left the store. I'd be surprised if they took it back after 10 days.

The 2 o'clock lug is basically wrecked. Shaved down real bad. That would be a no go for myself, as there are plenty of good watches out there of that reference.

Try to return if possible. For only a few bucks more you can find a very nice example.

Thanks for the replies everyone, especially bondtoys for your insights here and on Absolutely James Bond. I'm going to take cop414's advice and make sure the proper spring bars are installed and go from there. I'll certainly keep the thread updated. Thanks again for all of the advice!

For comparison, here is my unpolished 14060. Note the bevel at the lug and the squared crown guards, with the case line just above them. When the case has been polished, especially overpolished, you often lose that bevel, and the crown guards lose the square look and case line above them.

That aside, has anyone yet seen a non-lughole case which has been polished down so far that the hole gets visible??

It is not just "overpolished." It is very badly overpolished...
The 2 o'clock lug is almost half the size of the rest, no bevels, no lug tips, no square case lines, no nothing. Return if you still can. |
