Oyster Perpetual 39mm - Owner Comments Required
Hi All
If you own a 39mm OP, or have spent time with one, I'd like to you know what you think. I think the positives are obvious, but any negatives? How does the clasp feel compared to that on the Explorer, for example? I fear a purchase is imminent... Thanks Adam

Can't take my Blue Dial off! No negatives - and love the simpler Oyster bracelet with the slim, low profile clasp. It's one of a collection of 10 currently (Rolexes, APs, and Omega and a Vulcain) and I haven't been able to switch to one of the others since putting this one on my wrist! The dial is just stunning. Can't go wrong with this one!

Hard to pass on this watch; it's beautiful. Only a few drawbacks: 1) no date, 2) less detailed clasp, 3) lack of non-gimmicky dials, and 4) minimal lume. If you can live with the deficiencies then it's definitely a go. For me this would not be a daily wearer but it is still very attractive and I've looked at buying one.

Had an 114300 Rhodium as my first Rolex, actually just traded it for an Explorer 214270. I loved the OP, the rhodium dial was stunning and the little blue accents were a nice touch and made it feel like 'not my granddad's Rolex" and the quick release clasp was dynamite. but at the end of the day, my biggest complaints were that the text didn't really pop and that grey dial gets washed out easily in glare. I think both of those issues are only unique to the grey dial though

I own the blue dial. I echo the same as above. Can't take it off. The most comfortable steel bracelet by far in the Rolex line perhaps because the watch is so terrifically thin and light. Perfect size, gorgeous dial.
Ok so you want any downsides just before you purchase? Well if nitpicking I'd say this: 1) The Rolex clasp is not quick adjust but has made no difference to me. 2) The Rolex logo is etched in the clasp instead of being mounted in a 3D look like other clasps 3) No date but dial is more perfect for it. But some like date. I like date but not a deal breaker in our modern world with iPhones always with me. But still a date would be nice especially if it did not add thickness or weight. That might be hard to pass up. It would cannibalize datejust sales I assume. That's it. And that's digging for negativity because I love the watch and I too have other worth 3x the price. |

I own the purple (red grape.)
Zero negatives. Unless of course you have to have a date function. In this case though the dial is so clean without the date function. It works so well. |

I bought the grape 39 OP for the wife. She loves it, easy to read and the color fluctuations are nice. Nice sturdy clasp that's easy for her. Lume is good for her. Price was crazy good BNIB at the AD in the EU

Since you have an Exp already you are going to feel familiar with this watch. I can't think of negatives for the OP, great size, fit and comfort. Bracelet is slim and the difference is doesn't have a clasp lock like the exp. Overall a great watch. Go for the blue and you have a great duo!

All I can say is I looked at both the Explorer and the OP. I came home with the Explorer. The Easy-Link and lume on the Explorer are what done it for me.

I love mine. I went for the Rhodium dial in the end. Worn it pretty much every day since!

I love it, I've got the blue. I don't mind it having the non adjustable clasp. It's a beauty.
I'm pissed I've gotta send it out today to RSC for a new crystal (wife's ring). Gonna be a long month without it

Got a blue dial - love it ! I was looking for simple / symmetrical easy to wear watch
this one fills my wants - 39 mm is a good size for my wrist - it does wear a bit larger Easy link would have been a nice feature but not a deal breaker [obvious a price point thing ] the movement is superb similar or same as Explorer - keeps time within 1 second /day ! Main issue I'm having is wanting a Sub to compliment the OP - Could be a 2 watch "collection " |

You've already seen my thread, as you posted a really nice compliment in it:
https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=522310 Even with my collection, this humble Rolex does not look out of place. Almost a month on, and the only other watch I've worn is my PP 5146G. That lasted 24 hrs, and the OP 39 was back on the next day! It's stunning. The only caveat was that I thought the Rhodium dial didn't look as good in person as it does in pics, and it wasn't very legible either. Blue or red grape are both lovely. |

I'm interested in the rhodium as I have a few blue dials, my only issue is - is it too monochrome and are the sky blue accents enough to override this? Chronext will have the best price.

Neil, check it on your wrist first. Tastes vary, and no offence to rhodium owners - it's a very nice watch indeed - but having owned a 16622, I found it a similar exercise in monochromicity, if that's a word. It's an obvious consequence of steel watches with silvery dials, and I have a similar "problem" with my own El Primero.

I agree, I'd try it on. I loved it in photos but it just did nothing for me on the wrist.

Wore the rhodium and loved it. Sorry, no negatives to report. Had no trouble with the glare and the understated lume at night is more than readable yet it doesn't jolt you awake-just right! Band very comfortable. Dial IMHO even more beautiful in person than on the multitude of great pics you'll see around. I'm a vintage guy and this would be THE modern watch for me (and a black omega AT 39 coax as well, perhaps!) :)

For me the lack of Easylink is definitely a drawback. Also, the colorful hour markers can be a love/hate thing. For me, it kind of makes the watch less serious, as a Rolex. But other than that, it is a great everyday watch. Light and durable.

My OP39 rhodium is my first and only Rolex (so far)... absolutely love it. I really wanted the Explorer I at first but I just couldn't justify spending the extra ~$1000 for basically the same watch with a few "upgrades" (Easylink, more lume). It felt like the OP39 had a more youthful look while the Explorer I was more classic.
No real negatives to say about the watch... sometimes I do wish for a date window, but I can definitely live without it. Mine has a few scuffs on the polished domed bezel, but they can be polished out quite easily in the future. I absolutely LOVE the way that the light plays with the sunburst dial... I get so distracted by it sometimes. Legibility has not been an issue for me. It's easily my most comfortable watch and it could be my "one and only"... but I gotta give some love to my other watches (particularly my Tudor Black Bay Black) |

I just feel I'd get bored with the coloured lume dots after a while.

Thanks for all your thoughts and pictures
I think the understated nature of the watch, with its discrete size, profile and colour, suits me very well. As for the coloured dots... I only like the blue so it's just as well I prefer the rhodium dial. More pictures, please?

here's my blue - easy to wear this every day with most attire
I've mentioned in previous post that my feeling is the blue is a bit sportier than the Rhodium which is a touch dressier [ imho] |
