A Hello And A Question of Appearance

Hey all,

New member here on TRF after a bit (ok more than a bit) of lurking about. I appreciated the conversations and knowledge to be gained. As such, I figured this might be a good place to come with a question concerning wearing/appearances with a Rolex.

So short story lead-up; I'm a non-trad med student currently sweating through boards and such. I decided to reward/motivate myself to get a 'proper' diving watch. I already happen to have a Breitling Avenger GMT and an Omega Aqua Terra. I recently also had a Chronomat, however, I found it felt more like a shackle on the wrist (and I couldn't see wearing it in any situation I wouldn't use a G-Shock for instead). Thus, I traded the Chronomat in and went for a Sub ND, as I generally disliked the cyclops whenever it was on the wrist. I also like the clean lines of the ND and hey, I have a phone to know what day it is and harass me with reminders, etc. I bought the Sub for myself; I prefer to go 'under the radar' when wearing a watch and would rather it be an accentuating piece than draw way too much attention.

All that being said, the question I had concerned appearance and general wear. I put the AT on leather to use as a 'dressier' sports watch, and I put the Avenger GMT on rubber as a full sports watch of sorts.

I was curious about how much 'attention' is grabbed with a ND Sub vs other watches, as I probably would be wearing it with sleeves etc vs, say, at the beach. Do you find it relatively easy to wear without getting eyes all over it, or do you find it to be more a showy piece and one I should be more, well, circumspect in wearing? I want it as a daily wear (to alternate with the Avenger), but I was worried about things like the lack of AR coating, ceramic being shinier, etc. Do you find this a significant issue?

The Submariner is one of the most copied watches in the world. Probably not going to attract much attention except from another Roles owner or WIS.

I wear my SDc daily and it draws very little attention.

I've had my 114060 for a long time and the only people who ever notice or comment on it are customers (I work at an AD). I had three previous Rolexes (Date, Datejust) over the years and can count on one hand the number of times someone ever said anything about them.

Something I just learned/re-learned about Rolex watches: They are much thinner than lots of other brands. My new GMT Master II is only 12mm tall on my wrist, and the Subs are only 13mm. This lower profile will attract less attention than a bigger/bulkier watches. And if you get a basic stainless steel model it will definitely fly under the radar. The only ones who will see it, identify it at a glance, and perhaps make an admiring comment, are fellow Rolex aficionados.

I predict you not attract too much attention, and you will appreciate the function of a premium watch.

As hard as it may be for you to imagine... nobody notices or pays any attention to these watches.

People are just trying their best to get through the day.

The whole thing is a non-issue.

Please bear in mind that your watch is occupying a large part of your thoughts, but likely zero percent of other people's thoughts...
HOWEVER, it's true that the Rolex Co. nowadays, seems intent on producing watches with more and more of the 'BLING' effect, and in my opinion, these watches are bound to attract more attention.
This seems to be what people want.

It's a choice. It's difficult to wear a piece of 'BLING' and not have people thinking that you're trying to 'state' something.

Non-traditional medical student. I did a 4yr degree, did a stint as a military officer, got out, went back to school 2 years to do a post-bac pre-medical program (apparently political science and astronomy 101 didn't count for med applications...). Worked for a year as a medical scribe while applying and then got in. I get the whole Billy Madison feel, sometimes.

Well, the rationale for that was I want it to be something for myself to enjoy; I just wanted a nice daily watch that will last and to change up between what I already have.

I wasn't planning on wearing it around a hospital or saying 'Hey, look at me'. The idea I got growing up was 'don't ever let the clothes/stuff outshine the man', so to speak. If it is noticed at all, the idea would be it just looks the part of being put together. Given the responses though, it seems like I over-thought the issue.

Nobody notices. I have been wearing Rolex for close on 36 years, and I can honestly say that the only people who have commented​ on my watch have been other wearers. Them who knows know. The others don't understand.

Like others have said. Buy what you want & enjoy. Ive been wearing rolex sports models for over 10 years and can count on one hand how many people have said anything to me about it excluding other WIS. I currently wear a 16800 sub daily and my siekos get more notice than the sub ever does. I noticed a guy staring at my $300 seiko last week harder than anyone has ever looked at one of my nicer watches!!! Lol

The 114060, no one will notice! If they do, it'll be another watch lover. Your Avenger and AT will probably get more attention than the ND. Its currently my favorite watch within my stable! Get it, you love the balance and symmetry. There's never a bad angle when looking at it!

Watches are antiquated ... the only people who notice my watch are other watch lovers. If you are concerned about the shinier sub w the ceramic and all, try on a 5 digit pre-ceramic one

You sure you don't want a date? Even in the age of the electronic medical record I'm still signing and dating a bunch of things throughout the day. I look down at my wrist constantly for the date.

Oh, and agree with everyone else. Nobody will notice your watch except other watch lovers.

Me too, I sign and date documents frequently. A date is an absolute must in my books!

No one except Rolex owners, aspiring Rolex owners, or WISs in general are going to notice a Rolex. Mechanical watches are mostly a thing of the past.

Agreed what others say about the date. I use mine quite a bit for work, too, although I'm not a physician.

The brushed bracelet and simplicity of the Sub will probably be more under the radar than any Breitling so you should be pleasantly surprised.

Welcome. And I am with the rest. A sub will not draw any unwanted attention. But if you still think it is too flashy try to find a clean and complete 5 digit sub.
