I thought you all were trouble makers when I joined and found myself going from browsing to owning a Rolex a few weeks later. Then I stumbled across the writing instruments section. You won't regret it. And your Pilot is a gorgeous 1st FP! You have started with a leap!

You will meet some of the finest and most generous people in this hobby! In that group are folks like Jim (AKA Jar) that have knowledge beyond anything I have garnered in my 30 years of collecting! And are more than willing to share and invest their time in us. IMO, Jim is one of the crown jewels of all the FP forums. FPN, FP Geeks, and here on TRF.

I realize it's probably a 4-5 hour drive but you might want to look into coming up to the Chicago Pen Show next month. It's a huge show. The most admired and knowledge people in the world of pens are all there to meet, talk to and make deals on all kinds of pens. You'd not be disappointed!

Patience first.

There are many kinds of italic nibs.

There are Crisp Italics, very flat and with sharp corners. They give the greatest line variation but must be used slowly and carefully to keep the nib flat on the paper. Very light hand absolutely necessary.

Then there are cursive italics. They have the corners slightly rounded to keep from catching the paper. They allow faster writing but also give less variation.

There are stub nibs with the corners rounded even more. They are the most forgiving but give the least variation. Montblanc "B" and wider nibs are all stubs.

Finally there are the oblique italic nibs. Look down at your toes. Oblique nibs are angled like you feet and even described as right foot or left foot. They work well if you hold your paper at a heavy angle or for certain German scripts.

Most makers offer italics but often you must special order them.

The route I suggest once you get an idea of what you want is to get a fountain pen with a "B" or wider nib and then have one of the nib smiths turn it into an italic. Places I'd recommend in a heartbeat are:

IndyPenDance: taught by Richard Binder
Pendamonium: the lady that did the Sheaffer factory stubs, maybe the finest pens ever made, on board.
Classic Pens/nibs.com: currently most modifications are done by someone taught by John Mottishaw.

The important things is to have a personal discussion with which ever you choose and answer the questions they ask before even picking out a pen. Then listen to their recommendations. If there is a pen that you like and they do not sell it, ask if there are any issues that might be faced.
