GMT Master with Submariner font ?
OK I have looked at more rolexes on line by EYEBALLS are burnt. I was unable to find any GMT MASTER dial variant with the text-copy on my 1966 watch (image A) I did come across the font on many similar year submariners (image B,C). The wider font with extended P and R and A U etc. It is exactly the same as a Submariner. I also was told that Rolex in the early days ordered dials from SINGER for a specific amount of watches, but because of the demand, SINGER had to make more but after the initial run. Im sure a second printed dial would never be the same but in this case it looks like Rolex may have used the Submariner art or dies to print some of the GMT dials (using the Sub wider shorter font) maybe they used the SUB art and only changed the name SUBMARINER to GMT-MASTER? I do not think this would be considered a variant but instead a Cross over dial having exited the gilt to white and the need to make more after the initial run. It may be but im only guessing. the photos do speak for themselves as GMT mark 1-2-3-4 do not have that stretched font as on the SUBs. I do know for sure the copy on my 1966 is sharper in detail and clarity then I have seen on almost all examples. Not that its worth more or rare, just an oddball crossover with very amazing clarity. (NOTE the R in perpetual and my GMT have a very slight blob of white where the R arch meets the front leg just like on the SUB) its hard to see but it also gives some evidence that its the same die used on the SUBs... Any help with this please let me know.. thanks; PS also note the O hidden behind my hour hand is round (trust me) and all GMTs are slightly oval and the S in Oyster is not like others on GMTs but is on SUBs.
