Which would you rather have...

Which would you rather have: the elite watch of your choice (Patek, VC, Lange, etc.) or 5-ish Rolexes for the same price?

I really don't know...I'd probably choose a Patek, but 5 Rolexes is hard to pass up.

I did make the choice and chose 5-ish Rolexes.

I've said to my friends many times, I'd rather have five $5,000 watches than one $25,000 watch.

X2 Not quite there yet but working on it. I don't have enough class to wear a Patek or VC or what have you. I'm "marrying up" with Rolex.

5 Rolex, for sure... unless you fall in love with another or a non-Rolex has a particular meaning to you! (In my case, I don't have your dilemma; Rolex has particular meaning to me... I trained, taught swimming, and went to university across the street from the Rolex HQ in Geneva and always dreamt of getting one... Only now, after 14 yrs in the U.S., did I get one... a present from my wife!)

I would take the 5 Rolex's as well, though I would love to know what 5 you are getting for 25K, unless you are talking preowned?

Why do many long term watch lovers SO RARELY weigh in to help explain what they went through in order to help newbies? We just get this constant ROLEX, ROLEX, ROLEX crap. Yea, yea, it's a Rolex site. BIG DEAL!! It's more of a populated by smart, interested and interesting people that care about watches site. EXPAND THE BRAIN people. Share what you have gone through in watch collecting. Discourage an owner of a white Millie from buying a black Millie as his next watch, etc.

Why does one $25,000 watch have to equal 5 Rolex watches (not that it's possible today anyway)? What happened to IWC, BP, Breitling, Seiko, and many other brands?

What ARE you buying? 5 sport watches before a single dress watch? If you get to sit around in your underwear all day or park on the beach for hours that's fine. If your a citizen of normal planet Earth, a dress watch and a sports watch should be mandatory before a second of another. If you lurk around here and see nothing but pics of SUB, GMT, Millie, SDDS, you will not be spending your money well in my view.

So to answer the question on different terms. If I had $25K to spend I'd probably buy a $12K dress watch, an $8K nice sport watch, and a couple of attractive cheap watches (chrono, etc) that I like for some variety. I would not buy a SD, SUB, GMT, and a Millie.

I would take 5 Rolex's but I would try to make sure there was variety.

Submariner
Datejust
GMT
Daytona
And a Lady's watch for my fiance.

I know 3 of these are sport watches but they are all very different and with different functions.

PS - surely one Rolex out of 5 is enough for my girlfreind. Don't want to seem greedy

I think I could get by with 4,

SS SM date for everyday wear,
SS Plat Yacht-Master for casual wear,
Gold dress model-not sure as I don't even have the first two yet,
Something for the wife (she will be *issed if I have 3 rollies and she doesn't have 1 yet!)

Yep easyfor me too.......... 5 Rolex

Would certainly mix it in terms of both looks; white/black dials and styles: Sport and dress.

NO GOLD though

Steady on Matt, you have some valid points for sure but the question in the thread is 1 "Elite" watch or 5 Rolex?..........

AGREED

Or two $10,000 and three $6500 watches instead of one $39,500 watch...

Unless of course I could flip the $39,500 watch in one year for $79,000; in which case I would so I could buy four $10,000 and six $6500 Rolexs
