1st Rolex is underway. But is it too soon...?

I always liked watches. I make an average amount of money compared to friends/family/co-workers, but always wore better than average watches. I used to only care about the way they look so I always bought quartz. Didn't get the mechanical thing at all. But since I bought a Tag Heuer Carrera chrono off the bay, I started to appreciate mechanical watches more and more...

I started coming here daily and a few months ago I decided I wanted to save up for a pre-owned Submariner date. Since then I've been looking at pre-owned Subs everywhere and know exactly what they should cost.

Last weekend, I discovered a great deal. The seller is totally trustworthy and needs to get rid of it. I'm going to examine his Sub this friday, but honestly it's a bit too soon. I'll be only able to buy it if I sell my Carrera. I don't have a big problem with that because I'm sure I'll neglect the Carrera once I get the Sub, but still, it feels a little too soon. On the other hand, some people buy a Rolex on impulse but I have been admiring Sub pictures for months! Shouldn't that count for something? ;-)

I'm torn. What do you think I should do? Keep my eyes closed for Subs for a while and buy one in six months (for probably around 500 hundred bucks more)? Or buy it now, rejoice in the amazing deal I got and quickly sell my Carrera so I'm out of debt again...?

I think you will have your answer once you have seen the watch. If it "smiles" at you, the price is right and you can afford it then certainly buy it. All else being equal why hold off - the only things that should stop you would be if you did not like that particular watch, doubted its veracity or you can not afford it.

You have obviously been thinking about this for a while so you are not buying on impulse. Just be sure the seller and the watch are 100% ok. In my view its always best to buy from an AD for peace of mind - even if you have to pay more.

Go for the Sub, don't miss out. Its a super watch you won't regret it. Just make sure you know your stuff when buying second hand.

Tough choices.. I'm not sure what the market is for a Carrera so you should be prepared to wait for a while if you go that route..

I would sell the Carrera first. Then with that money in your pocket - make the decision.

I recently sold my Tag - probably only got 30% of its value. Also, Nobody that sold Rolex (or Omega) would even accept it at all in trade.

Once you see the sub then make your decision.
Be prepared to take a loss on Tag unless you got it at a killer deal.
I've had lots of problems with Tag's mechanical movement. I think they make fine quartz watches but not mechanical. but I do have to qualify I have no experience with the newer movements like S, 8...etc

Thanks for all your kind replies. Maybe it's not entirely fair to ask for this kind of advice on a Rolex forum :D but fair shmair, I needed the support!

I'll take look at the Sub this friday and if it's as beautiful as in the pictures, I'll go for it.

I got a good deal on the Carrera too, so I won't sell it at a big loss I'm sure.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
