Finally got a Cotton Bowl Tudor (and an offer)

Well, after many years of playing with Rolexes, I finally got myself a 1974 7017/0 Cotton Bowl watch. Unlike many other similar watches, this one is a coach's watch, not a player's - about 100 players on a team and only about 10 coaches.

Richard, any comments?

Now, As far as I know these watches came with 20mm C&I band (please correct me if I'm wrong). The head I got came on generic Chinese band, so I looked through my junk pile and found an american riveted band - but I cannot find a 20mm from buckle 1969 (as the serial of the watch is 692xxx)!!! found an FB USA buckle, but that's not good enough. **** Therefore, I will trade a sub clasp for a 20 mm C&I clasp dated 1969.

Here's mine from HQ Milton. Wonder why they're so different despite both being awarded for the 1974 game (minute track, hour markers, placement of shield, placement of cotton ball in relation to shield)...Perhaps different models were given to different staff (e.g., players vs. coaches).

Texas lost that game! Trade that one in for a 1973 Cotton Bowl Classic. Texas beat Bama!!

I never seen the Tudor, a couple of my friends had Rolexes from the 60s.

The Tudors are definitely different. Is your 7017/0 or 7020/0? What are the first three of the serial? Mine are 692,xxx (dating the watch to 1969).

Richard posted a very informative piece on these watches on the vintage forum. It's not unlikely that Rolex was giving away watches that they were unable to sell or had more than they needed.

Mine's a 7017/0, also serial 692xxx.

Back in the day, the Cotton Bowl was one of the Big 4 New Years games, but had to work harder to get premiere teams to visit (even in good weather, Dallas has less sights and activities than LA, New Orleans and Miami- and the weather wasn't always good). I can see them trying to differentiate with better player gifts, until the NCAA capped the value.

The CB had a rep as a Bowl that worked hard to make it fun for the teams. "Hoss" Brock was the chief recruiter. He was a good old boy, and a real hoot. When Baylor (Baptist) University got the automatic Southwest Conference bid, he said, "Those Baylor fans come into town with the 10 Commandments and a $10 bill- and they don't break either".
