Pretentious Posing

As a relatively new member here, I get a good laugh at all the prentious, forced posing of Rolex watches with other luxury branded items: shoes, wallets, ties, steering wheels, and whatever else becomes the theme of the day.

I do appreciate and find value in those that post pics of alternative band options. A lot easier to see the asthetics than to visualize.

Should get some great replies.....

Moved out of the Rolex discussion area.... The topic has nothing to do with Rolex.

You've come to a forum about gratuitous splendor for luxury watches, and yet you post negatively about correlating with other luxury items?

Me thinks you should look in the mirror and question your own motivations.

Agree with superdog...in 1960 when Rolex were tools for working men this thread would have a good point but now they are luxury jewellery.

It's just something that goes with the territory on the forum. There are many of us here from every section of the financial spectrum. What brings us all here is a love of Rolex.

It's quite simple. Don't like it, don't look at it. If someone want to post a pic of their Rolex and their Ferrari, that's great. I like Rolexes and I like Ferraris.

Don't give much more thought to it, my friend. If you do, you'll only make yourself more irritated.

As for "pretentious posing", that seems to be the only kind!

It's a diverse forum Brad; you'll find quite a lot of this here but there's also a lot of very valuable information exchanged as well. Price of admission I suppose.

While I fundamentally agree with your sentiment, I've found that tolerance goes a long way to making the experience more pleasant.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm a one luxury guy: watches.

Everything else I own is pretty normal.

Two of my Rolex watches and my wallet.

Can't speak for everyone, of course, but I've always maintained that if all my pretentious, forced posing of luxury branded items can make even one person laugh, then it's all been worth it.

An interesting query. From a hypothetical perspective we can probably use the simple equation: (1) pride of ownership + (2) horological interests + (3) certain variable factors (e.g. seeking outside validation, inherent pretentiousness and/or ostentatious inclinations) = the pics you seem to be questioning as a whole.

In today's hectic and oftentimes brutal urban/suburban existence, sharing images of premium leather, high-end barbeque smokers, expensive watches and various 400+HP asphalt-burners are simply ways of saying (or conveying) that "I hope everything turns out OK despite the everyday crap that I have to put up with in order to provide a decent and promising life for myself and/or family."

All things considered, a Rolex is a trivial reward for a job well done. BTW, Happy Father's Day to those who are Dads.

Agreed. I have worked hard for 30 years. I'm not a rich man by any means, but in turn, I measure my success in ways other than my bank account. I have a roof over my head and food on my table and my family loves me.

That said, having worked hard, I felt as if I deserved a reward for doing so. I was able to buy my Rolex at a great price and there definitely is pride in ownership.

OP: As far as the "pretentious posing" goes....what's the big deal? We're all just having a little fun. On another forum I am on devoted to another pursuit, I get a lot of ribbing for having a Rolex.

It's all how you look at it. I simply choose not to be annoyed by it and have learned to enjoy it. I get to see "how the other half lives".

That's a grey Burberry raincoat in the 911 pic. Shown over a nice cashmere sweater.

Why should people be apologetic about showing some of their material possessions? Live and let live, that's what I say

Oh, I concur. The idea of pretension on a forum about a near luxury product is what I find silly.
