How Outgoing Are You???

Recent threads have made me think about how engaging people are with strangers. Was recently on vacation with the family. Was going to our favorite diner for breakfast. Had a family approaching on the sidewalk, one of the kids had an Indians baseball cap on. Started talking to the Dad, come to find out we live in the same city appx 500 miles away. They were attending a wedding at a nearby resort. The bride and groom live about five minutes from me. Made small talk and wished them well. Recommended some places for them to visit while they were in town.

Another time I was in a city park watching my 6 year old son on the playground. Another Dad was doing the same with his son. Started talking and it turns out that he had just moved there from Michigan. Turns out that we share many interests, including Freemasonry. He now visits my Lodge and we're becoming friends.

So, how outgoing are you????

I frequently yell at kids to get off my lawn, does that count?

I talk to just about everyone. But hardly connect past an innitial encounter. I find it nice to engage with different people, usually leads to interesting conversation, but overall I'm a rather reserved person with a close group of family and a few friends that I spend most my time with.

I was out eating the other day with my wife and this guy started talking to me. It was unpleasant to me as I'm a bit of a quiet person around people I don't know.

I know the guy had to take our food order, but jeez.

I always try to be cordial but any sort of outgoingness on my part usually depends on the social environment.

Speaking of a certain form of aggressive outgoingness and uncalled for behavior, one evening I was wearing my Cooperstown 1954 Cleveland Indians baseball cap (the only one with both the C and Chief Wahoo embroidered on the front) in a bar when this guy claiming to be of Native American descent walked up and started ragging on me for wearing such an affront to 'his people'. After he stomped out, one of the local patrons informed me that the guy was simply drunk and not even 1/100th Native American. He was probably related to Elizabeth 'Pocahontas' Warren.

I tend to keep to myself unless someone engages me first and I've been that way since my early days. There were two times though last summer while on a cruise that I struck up a conversation with two random people because I noticed their Rolex's.

I'd say that I'm pretty open, I tend to have a very good BS meter though and will cut pretty much any conversation short if that needle begins to rise.

Definitely a cultural thing I think, as demonstrated earlier this week in a department store when an American lady started talking to everyone in the lift about the ornate ceiling, all the Brits shuffled about embarrased and ignored her.

In the usa i find especially at casinos, hotels etc it is customary to give a nod or say hello in the elevator. I would guess I am middle of the road but do talk to people I dont know daily.

I tend to do it if I am abroad or in a holiday environment (maybe people are more relaxed) but would never do it day to day in the UK.

I don't mind engaging strangers and I'm always cordial when in public, but I prefer a lot of privacy and spend most of my free-time alone.

It always makes me uncomfortable when someone goes off the deep end and when the neighbors are interviewed, they say the individual was friendly, but he didn't say much and stayed to himself.

I'm reasonably comfortable initiating conversations with most people, in a manner very similar to examples you gave above, and would consider this average.

i talk to most anyone if they come into my personal space... general chitchat and such.

but i don't make a meaningful effort to know anyone anymore outside of this forum, business or my 3rd wife's girlfriends/chardonnay/yoga buddies.

I've got both sides of the British disease in me, on my own I'm usually quite quiet, but in a group I'm usually the hooligan everyone is always talking about.

Its totally dependent on my surroundings.

Generally I'm pretty chill and I like to sit back and let the conversation come to me.

For whatever reason it usually does

My wife tells me I'm to outgoing! Met a couple last year looking at houses in the neighborhood we had just built our new home in. Took them to our house, drove them around to show them some models, really nice people, and before we new it, we had the wife, that had already landed a job here in Florida staying with us for 2 months while her husband went back to Colorado to close the deal on the home they were selling!! Call me crazy, but am a pretty good judge of character, and to this day we are good friends. And for all You guys out there, no, she wasn't a young and hot!! I just to like help if I can. I think that's why my luck has been pretty good most of my life!!

I am generally pretty quiet and don't go out of my way to strike up small talk with strangers. I have to be social at work all day (sometimes 12-14 hours a day) and by the time I am done working I just want quiet and no talky talky. Drives the women in my house nuts sometimes.
