Bar Tabs Sure Can Add Up

Came across a few shoeboxes filled with some of my old VISA statements/stamped paid and before running them through the paper shredder, I took a brief run through the various expenditures.

Wow. There was a timeframe (pre-matrimony) where I was apparently out 4-5 nights a week for a period of 8+ years drinking and shooting pool in one of the local dive bars. A typical receipt ran about $15.00-$20.00 and if one multiplied those figures by 4-5 evenings times 50+ weeks over 8-9 years, it came to well over $35K for the duration of these recreational excursions.

With inflation and cost of living indexes perpetually on the rise, $35K doesn't go very far these days but in retrospect I wouldn't mind having that amount lying around in loose cash or as a supplement to my current bank balance. Funny how when you're young, money can fly through your pockets faster than a speeding bullet.

On the other hand, it was fun (at the time) being able to step out whenever you pleased with no fiscal responsibilities and/or obligations other than to oneself and any immediate expenses. Marriage and family life changes all of that.

Glad I don't keep all of my old statements. I would probably beat myself up over what I spent on cigarettes and booze.

$35k over 8-9 years isn't so bad. We've been paying $15-20 a drink in NYC for 20 years. That turns out to be 2 drinks a day over 3 years. Factor in weekends and buying rounds and thats conservatively 1 year of going out

...and not just bar tabs that add up.
Over my working life, I worked with folks that went out for coffee, and then lunch every day plus cans of Coke and chocolate bars every day. Try adding that up over 40 years of work.
$20./day = $100./week = $5000./year = $200,000. in a 40 year career.
I made my own coffee and took my own lunch and never ate crap between meals.
Never had a mortgage because we paid cash for a new house before we got married.
It's a choice...

Meanwhile, tuition at local prep school Marin Academy now exceeds $42,000 per year -- I'll take 8.5 years at the dive bar for $35,000 please

Really glad I don't have my old bar receipts. But it was worth every penny I'm told.

Reminds me of an old joke:
A man was lamenting being broke after only a year of winning a million dollars in a lottery. "Where did the money go", asked a friend?
He answered, "I spent over $700k on booze and women. The rest I just wasted."

in Bristol's defense (Never imagined I would start a sentence this way ) he said he saved his monthly credit card statements, not the receipts from the bar

Dear BC, at first I thought you may be lonely. Then I was marginally irritated by your posts. As your locked threads grew I became more interested. Now I'm obsessed! Can you share some information about you?

I wish I could've gone out for $15-$20 even back in the day

OP! Don't torture yourself. I've blown a lot of money on similar things but I wouldn't change a thing. I met a lot of interesting characters along the way

If I were to add up the amount my wife and I blow on dinners and drinks out...I'd likely have a heart attack.

Why care, enjoy while you can! You only get one shot at life, make it count

Ha. Enjoying it with reckless abandon.

But I definitely would not want to know the actual tab.
