Union Jack 400 years old today
Here's a little known fact, it was 400 years ago today that James I decreed that the flag of Scotland and England (St Andrew's cross and St George's cross) be combined and flown on Naval vessels. It was not until 1801 that the flag of Ireland (St Patrick's cross) was added to make the Union Jack we know today.
Most loyal Englishmen, Scotsmen, Irishmen and Welshmen most probably still prefer their individual flags, I know I do.

Congrats to the UK on this momentous birthday.
We had 'Jack' in the corner of our national flag until the year I was born, 1965, when the current maple leaf flag was born. While I like the commonwealth connection, I'm happy we don't have the Jack on our national flag anymore. However, it is still in the corner of most Canadian provincial/territorial flags and I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that it's still on our Air Force and Navy ensigns. As a side note, I have the full size (8.5' X 4.5') union jack my grandfather brought back from WW1, where this flag flew representing Canada at Passchendaele, the Somme and Vimy Ridge. |

It's made of wool and was manufactured in Peterborough, Ontario. Kind of cool that it journeyed to Europe and made it back from 'the war to end all wars' particularly cuz my grandad took about a year to get home, cuz he basically hitch hiked his way around the world on various ships, partying his 'arse' off. |

Y DDRAIG GOCH DDYRY CYCHWYN (roughly translated means the Red Dragon inspires action)The Celtic dragon also represents sovereignty, power or as in Pendragon, the Celtic word meaning warrior chief, the Red Dragon of Cadwallader is the true emblem Wales. And any association we Welsh have with sheep. Are wicked lies put about by the true aficionados,in the sheep world, the New Zealanders just ask JJ.
