Finally ordered a 116610LN Sub. Some thoughts on the path to it... and what to sell..
I spent some time looking at the recent Ceramic Daytona and for a while was really thinking it could be for me as a first (and who knows, only) Rolex. I just really like it, but at times wondered if I was not trying to convince myself a bit too hard.
One problem is the availability. ADs I reached told me the waiting lists were over 5 years so they wouldn't take any more orders. I found a couple online in a shop I trust, but they're selling it for 16.000 EUR, which is about 5K over catalog. I am not planning on selling the watch, but can't help seeing it as financial resource, and buying so high probably means the loss will be significant if I sell it (assuming Daytona stocks stabilize a bit more in the coming years). Excluding price, there's something simple that made me doubt it. The Date. I check out the date on my watch very frequently, not sure if it's because the Windows bar has no date by default, or any other practical reason, but not having a date window would annoy me a bit. At at 16K, being annoyed is not something to expect, even if it only happens once or twice a day. So I looked at other Rolex models and noticed a pattern of interest towards the Sub. I used to find it very uninteresting (maybe because of all the copies and the way it inspired other watches) but with time it got my attention more and more. The GlideLock system also made it a bit more interesting compared to other divers. I think it's something that might be handy and comfort is very important. Otherwise, perhaps a GMT would have been a good choice. I like the symmetry of the no-date Submariner, it's cleaner and simpler, plus I used to find the cyclops a bit ugly and dated, but with time, that changed. I kinda like the cyclops now. The design is common, but it's still very future-proof, it just doesn't become tiring like other designs. This will be my first Rolex and I'm not a serious collector, so I'm wondering if I should get rid of one of my other two watches. I'd like to have only two, three maximum. This is what I have... I know TAG isn't super loved, but I like the Aquaracer. It's the first watch I got (2 years ago) and finishing is pretty good. The rubber strap is also extremely comfortable. There's only a Sellita SW200 inside it, but overall it feels well made. Having two divers feels a bit unnecessary, so I'm tempted to sell it but It will be hard to reach even 50% of what I paid for it. I'm not sure if it's wiser to keep or to sell. The other watch is the DSOTM and I also thought about selling it (especially if getting the Daytona) but decided I couldn't, at least not yet. It's just a very special watch and materials. My love for it isn't 100% (it's perhaps a bit too thick) but it's special. I have to keep it for now. So I'll be adding the sub. I'm getting it from a GS, mostly because I reached out to 4 ADs in my country and all said they didn't have a Sub. Two of them said they wouldn't take orders on it at all due to "Waiting list". Not sure what they mean since I always thought there was plenty of Submariner stock out there. I found it on a GS in the UK for only -4% below retail. Not a really good price and it will still take one month to source, but I hope it will be worth it. Hey, let's see what this Rolex hype thing is all about |

Keep your other watches if you don't need to sell them. Sell them for your inevitable second Rolex. Subc at close to retail in the UK is a good deal.
