Do any of you allow friends or colleagues to handle your Rolex?

Hello.. For the first time ever I wore my SubC to a conference at work today. Colleagues immediately noticed my watch. I received plenty of compliments on my watch. I was even asked a couple of times by people that I consider to be friends to take my watch off so that they could take a closer look at it. Do any of you allow colleagues or friends to handle your Rolex?

I've never been asked, but I would. It's just a watch after all.

Have to agree Adam and after all its not some sort of exclusive item, there must be many many millions of them around in this world today.Like you say its just a watch and quite a tough watch, that touching by any human will not harm it in any way.And in almost 40 years of wearing Rolex watches you could count on one hand the number that have even noticed whatever watch I was wearing.

Exactly this. Except maybe something more like I wish someone would ask... and yes of course I would.

But I wouldn't let them drive my Porsche.

This^^^^ it's just a watch. Maybe not a stranger on the street but certainly a business colleague.

Handle it, try it on, heck wear it for the day and see if you like it.

No, especially the AD's that like to fondle it when I try on new watches. Bad!

Yes, people rarely notice or comment, but occasionally a friend will ask to see one. A real good friend was thinking about buying a Sub so I had him wear mine while we were out for dinner. Would have let him take it for the week, but he refused. He is my golf partner and a really solid guy. I trust him very much.
He is still on the fence. Loves the watch, but is very fiscally conservative. Very well off, but generally does not treat himself to luxury things. Sooner or later I will wear him down and he will buy one....LOL

I had a similar situation when I got my SubC and no longer wore my DSSD. He was very nervous about wearing it mostly bc of the fact it was a graduation gift for good grades but I allowed him to wear it for my wedding and I insisted he wore it when I was on vacation. He was a professional and the watch was insured. I'd already shatter the crystal and bezel once and had it repaired. He really wanted a nice watch and had saved hard for one. I kinda played a trick on him telling him if he did not want to wear it while I was on our 12 day honeymoon he could just give it back to me before I left but he did not know we were leaving at 4 o'clock in the morning so I told him to wear it until we got back. At the airport I sent him my AD info to check out some watches. Long story short when I got back I left him wear my SubC for a few days and within a month we have another wis. I am in no way a rich man but my true friends trust. Possessions can be replaced and he has done many great things for me. He eventually got a GMTc then in about 3 months traded for the Sub. He liked the DSSD as I did but with long sleeve shirts it's just too thick. Now he is off and running. And feel that I have helped him find a
Passion about watches and if that means I took a very small risk letting him
Wear one of my watches the reward is wonderful. Now I'm not saying I'd let him
Keep my AP at the time but I probably would if he asked) but falling in love with Rolex can lead to those higher end watches. In my opinion the minute rush of letting him wear a watch I wore 5-10x a year was well worth seeing if a quality watch was right for him. I guess I've been blessed by my old AD that sent me a 1-2 week old AP to wear for about a week to see if I liked it. My ex purchased it without me knowing and gifted it to me. We are divorced now but I guess the best thing is now I have another friend into watches now and love teaching him new things.

Yes, I would, there was a time when I was precious about them but that soon passes and as Adam says they really are just watches... but just don't let their cheeky kids handle them.

Sure, I just did the other day. A new guy at work commented on my GMT Master, and said he's always wanted one.

Thank you for your input. I did allow them to check it out. But I was little uncomfortable when I was asked the cost of the watch. I didn't answer the question with a dollar value.

I let the checkout guy at Best Buy try on my GMT2 Pepsi after he noticed it and gushed about how fine it was. I certainly wouldn't hand it to some guy on the street, especially if he looked like he could run fast, but otherwise I have no problems letting folks demo it for a couple minutes.

Last time I was asked, or at least the time I remember, my wife and I had a friend over, she's into watches and I just picked up my OP. She was messing around with the watches and my wife's rings. This was the result:

Nothings changed. Still not really worried about someone wanting to try it on etc. cost a few bucks and a few weeks. No big deal. Taking your style of thinking

When someone makes more than just a passing comment about my watch, I take it off and hand it to them. It's what I've always done.

My father would try to gift me the watch if I commented on it, so I stopped commenting. You made me remember him. He was a good man. It speaks well of you.

You know, my father is the same way. When I comment on something he just acquired, he takes it right off and hands it to me. "I was just commenting dad! Put it back on."

I have a few friends into watches, and some of those are considering buying something higher end. In those cases, I took my watch off and let them inspect it. Most people don't want to put it on, they just want to look at it closer, with their own hands, and see what the commotion is about. I also only take my watch off over a table or when I'm sitting down on the couch, never when standing or walking.

On every other scenario, i do like very much to talk watches with people, when i know they like watches i take it out before they even ask to see it, more than often they also do the same and it ends up being great fun to see and talk about what others are wearing.

I've always complimented people's watches, i do it almost everytime, even with strangers, made a few very good friends from it, that's what it's all about.

The one thing i hate is people who ask the price, it's absolutely ridiculous, if we are friends who know and love watches and you ask me the price i'll surely tell you, but when that's the first thing that comes out of your mouth (and it happens quite frequently) i don't wanna talk about it anymore.

Also, don't like when people pick up my watch and wind/set the time/unscrew the crown without my permission, don't have any problems with people turning the bezel, or even running the chrono if they ask me, but i find it very inappropriate unless i've authorized them to do it. watches are very personal for me and even winding them is something special that i like to do myself.

So yes, 90% of cases i'll start the conversation and proudly talk about it if they ask, but asking "is it a real watch?", "how much did you pay?" and setting the time put me off.
Not a big fan of the "Hey, how much?" or "That's real, right?". It's just off-putting. I don't ask if their branded clothing is real, why would it be ok to ask if something I own is real? Seems logical for us, but people in general just don't think logically for the most part. Commenting before thinking is the way it usually goes. Ditto for touching the watch before I've physically offered it over, messing with the crown, pushers, etc. Let's be respectful of other people's property. I'm sure it'd be equally as off-putting if I started picking up people's keys or phones.

This, exactly. Whether it's my Sub, Marathon, Tag, whatever. If someone at work strikes up a conversation about a watch I'm wearing, I'd consider myself snobbish to not let them take a closer look. Granted, I wear watches that are a bit outside of my pay grade, if you will. Not all that common for a nurse to wear a Rolex to work. Letting a Doctor wear my Sub while I wore his Hulk was a humorous moment. Still working on the Doc with the gold President...

But if I'm at the range, and somebody is interested in a toy I'm using, I'll typically let them try that out, too.

Sure, I'm generally open to the idea. That said, the only other person that has tried it on is another friend who is also a WIS but I didn't think twice about it, I actually volunteered if he wanted to try it on. He had told me he was looking at the Subs and has always wanted one so I didn't think twice about it.

Everytime. I even offer for curious strangers to try it on. You can have all the toys in the world, but what fun is there if you're playing alone.
