Watch winder?

Hi,

Just received a 1965 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust. I will only wear on special occasions. Curious if I should invest in an automatic winder? All thoughts appreciated.

There’s been a lot of written on this Forum about watch winders, but that I have not yet made a personal decision as to whether And which kind of Winder to buy. I too am Curious to see people’s latest thinking on this.

Good quality watch winders don’t rotate your Watch 24/7. Generally they change direction of rotations and do approx 650-950 turns/day. I use them as I rotate between different watches on a weekly basis and setting the date each time when they stop can be a big hassle.

However if I were only wearing a watch a couple of times a year as the OP intends, I wouldn’t bother with one.

Every few months/weeks? Let it rest stationary between occasions.

Plan ahead - usually day before I'd wind & set, ready to go next day.

Winders still need a power source, limits where you can hide your precious in between wears

Set it for the 14th and wear it tomorrow.
Then put it away for a month and a day.
On the 15th of next month wind it and wear it a day...
And so on, and so on, ad infinitum.
Lather, Rinse Repeat...

Only if you hack 'em in between & not all oldies do the hack

I let power die out naturally and it's usually 2-3 datewheel clicks.

I have 5 Rolex in Underwood winder and never a problem. Just get a good one to ensure no issues.

ya but mine can keep going for 2-3 dates your power reserve must be shot

On manuals I used to try to wind them just enough to run until the date I want them stopped at. yeah I need a life

The other day, I had to set a non hacking non quick set date sub. After that ordeal, I'm starting to come around on the idea of winders.

heck those things survive being spun backwards...

meh I'm the fella everyone in family tosses their dead watch to just workout whether it's quicker to go forwards or back despite constant omnimous warnings from watchmakers, haven't yet broken anything going reverse

But when it's exactly 15d out... temptation is great to bust out the power drill

Exactly....and if you rotate between 2-3 different watches if can be a real pain in the ass. I wear one and keep the other two on winders.

Short answer no complete waste of money with any Rolex watch which has at most a simple date complication.If needed on the wrist just manual wind it set time takes less than 30 seconds after all thats what the winding crown is for.

What happened with the 2 perfect winders you have?

I asked my AD this exact question regarding winders, and he told me Rolex’s position is to not recommend winders. Winders “age” the movement despite the durability.

I enjoy setting my watches so a winder seems like a complete waste to me and it will cause wear on the watch. The question is, how much do you value the convenience of never having to set the watch?

Interesting....But I can’t understand how a winder will cause any more wear to the movement vs wearing the watch on an daily basis.
Also surely setting the date when you don’t have a quick set causes more wear when you have to wind it sometime up to twenty times to get the date set.
Happy to be proven wrong, but this always seemed more of a stress on the movement then it’s sitting in a Watch wonder. Happy to hear from an expert. Maybe I need to get my watches off their winders....

I don’t think he meant it causes more wear only that as the movement runs, it wears (on the wrist or on the winder) versus not running when not being worn in the safe. I enjoy the process of setting my watch. Not to be hurried but savored.

I say NO. Definitely don't keep it on the winder. Do as suggested where it monthly. If the watch stopped last month on the 18th, get it out and set it to the 19th.

I actually sold all my nonquick set date models as there were just too many options for me and planning when yo wear ... (1st world problems).

My only caveat is they can be good, and I have a couple, to set watches for the coming week and get them set and wound. Helpful for a busy workday morning when you know you are wearing a blue shirt and want you sigma blue Datejust on that day.

If you can wear the watch every day, which you can of course, then a winder won’t hurt it. Whether it’s worth it or not is a personal decision.

However, setting the date on a non-quick set is a pain in the butt. I keep one or two watches on a winder to avoid having to spend 5 minutes spinning hands around to advance the numbers to the correct date.
