Why are some sea dweller case-backs engraved with "black" text and some not?
Please see the pictures for reference. Is it just where the black text has worn off on some pieces?

I would think that’s just dirt darkening the lettering. Years of wear makes it unavoidable. It could probably be cleaned with a soft toothbrush and soapy water but I like the darker letters.

All the ones I’ve seen had black lettering. I presume the bottom picture is caused through wear and tear and probably a polish.
The black lettering is a type of filling into a cavity, which over time can erode or fall out. People have different sweat levels or acidity as well as their lifestyles and will effect how fast this process occurs. Happy to be calibrate here! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

My guess is it's caused by sweat. I owned the 5 digit SD and the black letters wore off the caseback same as in your picture.

They all start off black.
Eventually the black paint in the letters wears/falls out. |
