How should I get this Red Submariner ready for wear?
Going through my grandfathers drawers when we found a Rolex Red Submariner. Didn’t even know it was a valuable watch until my mothers friend told us that it was. It’s probably been sitting in a drawer for 20+ years, and it has some scratches on the crystal and it’s missing the band and the pearl above the 12. It makes a weird noise when I shake it, reminiscent of a bearing that hasn’t been oiled, but when I stop shaking it the hands continue moving, so the insides are still intact. I just want to know what I should do to make it wearable, and what I should do about the missing band. I posted to a reddit thread and they told me not to send it to Rolex, and instead to a watchmaker like Bob Ridley. Is this a good idea, and are there any closer Rolex repairmen to the Miami area? Thanks!
(Sorry for only having one picture, it’s currently in a deposit box. I’ll update with more pics if you guys want. |

Consult a Watchmaker who is qualified to service a Vintage Rolex. I had my 1680 Red Sub serviced by Bob and Phillip Ridley of Watchmakers International. I’ve also had at least 4 other watches serviced by them since. I’m a client for life.

Find a watchmaker that understands vintage, and dont worry about proximity. A good watchmaker is priceless, and frankly proximity means nothing as we won't work on the watch in your presence.
