Buying a 2 years old NIB Rolex?

Has anyone bought a Rolex that was new in box but had been "on the shelf" for a couple years? I found a BLNR on eBay for buy-it now 9550 USD. This seems unusually low for a new BLNR so I looked at it and it's a 2015 model. It seems like maybe the protective plastic has been partially removed but it looks great, otherwise. I'm probably not going to buy it, but I wonder what the condition of the movement would be like if it's just been sitting in a box for 2 years. The seller has 100% positive feedback and it has box and papers, so I'm not sure why else it would be priced a bit lower.

Found one for couple hundred cheaper also BNIB from 2017.

I don't think there would be anything wrong with the movement if it is just sitting. Some ADs have watches for years as well, which ultimately get sold. As long as the warranty is good, you could just send it to RSC to have them look at it and verify everything is good to go.

Big Ben has been ticking away for over 150 years..

I don't think it likely that a Rolex movement that is a couple of years old would be different from one made yesterday..

Just a couple of months ago you could walk into most US ADs and buy a BLNR from the case. Obviously things are tight right now, but that's probably temporary. Unless you need the watch right now, I would call around to all your local ADs and even some non-local ADs and see what you find.

I wouldn't pay above retail for a BLNR, and certainly not from eBay, and even more certainly not for a 2 to 3 year old model with all that warranty lost.

Seems on the high side to me...isn't that above MSRP?

And agree...I would think twice about buying a Rolex on eBay.

Don’t buy a Rolex on eBay. Pictures are probably of a genuine BLNR but who knows what you’ll get in the mail...

Why would you?

1. Buy a BLNR on Ebay?
2. Pay above list?

And it's not even new.

So, why would you?

3. Buy an older BLNR on Ebay above list price??

As mentioned, up until the last couple of months the BLNR was plentiful in the USA, I'm sure if you call around or wait a short time you can purchase it new.

I purchased mine new this summer and without even asking, got it below list at an A&D.

By the way, it's a great watch and worth every penny and more.

He hasn't said who the ebay seller is. Their are millions of legit ebay sales. I understand the risks, but many legit sellers are on their or it wouldn't survive. I just don't care for PayPal and the way they keep your money as a seller.

Thanks Mark. If there’s no wait from an AD, that’s clearly the best option. Mostly, I’m wondering if anyone has bought any Rolex that had sat unused for an extended period after leaving the manufacturing facility and if that period of non-use has any effect on the movement. Could be from eBay or maybe one that’s been at the AD for a couple years and just hasn’t sold.

Personally, I’ve bought a lot of high end instruments on eBay with great success. So if the price and circumstances were right, I’d definitely go for it with a Rolex too.

Are you in the US? If so, I just bought a BLNR from an AD at list. I called around and there were several AD’s that were willing to ship it to me. eBay would be my last resort for a watch like this. And BTW, I have two watches for sale on eBay.

Yeah, but the millions aren’t selling Rolex. One of the most faked products in history. Too many other options available that eliminate the risk.

Maybe the ebay seller bought it and just put it in the safe as an investment. Some people do that.
Regarding movement. I don't think that's a big issue. I am sure there are tons of watches sitting in the dealer case unsold. Since it is under warranty, just need to send it in for a little lube.
