Serpico Y Laino

Having coveted a watch with this retailer's name on the dial for many years, I'm curious as to what value other collectors place on it...compared for example to Tiffany. The original Serpico Y Laino closed their doors in the mid 1960s...though other people reopened it later and continued the name. For me, however, watches with that name on the dial from the later store are not the same as those from the original. Your thoughts...and pictures of your watches.

For me ....

Hi John,

Good to see you popping up on the fora after a bit of a hiatus

For me, the Serpico Y Laino connection for Rolex is magical. Same goes for the historical Joyeria Rivera / Rolex link. Harks back to the time when the purchase of a Rolex was a big deal and one sourced from an exotic locale was just that bit more special IMHO.

But Tiffany ..... nope, I have no interest in at all. Might simply be a hang-up from my redneck / low-rent upbringing, but something deep within me has seen me walk past a few Tiffany outlets in my time .... but never feel any inclination to venture in.

For me, the whole fakee empire casts a shadow on the totally legitimate side of Tiffany too. I'm simply too lazy to ever want to explain my watches and go down the whole " ... Is it real or is it fake ... " track with any of my horological friends and trading partners. In the past I may have been accepting of a Tiffany dialled Rolex if it was accompanied by a raft of Tiffany documentation and sales receipts ..... but I'm guessing that the bad people can probably fake everything nowadays

Love the car in your avatar...tell me about it. I have the same feeling about Tiffany...I always thought of them as a woman's jewelry store...not a guy place. Tiffany on a Sub just ruins it for me...just my opinion. But the story of the two Italians, Serpico Y Laino, how they met, became partners, went back to Europe and secured the rights to sell Rolex...then how WW2 impacted on them...etc. My 1013 is an early one...1962 at the latest...and I can imagine a customer entering the store, looking for something elegant yet simple...seeing this..strapping it on their wrist...and walking out with it. The journey from that first owner to me I'll never know but it is nice to be part of the story.

Have a Merry Christmas and a good New Year.
