New member pleading for help on a 16713 Root Beer
Hello TRF!
I am new to the forum but have been lurking for a very long time on TRF to build up my knowledge on watches. I am in my mid 20s and have finally saved up enough money, after meeting all my priorities, for a 16713 Root Beer. I will get the watch in the next few days and will be posting more pictures. I plan to give this to my father for his up coming birthday. He has been wanting a X serial (my birth year) Root Beer all his life but every time he had his chance to get the watch, he chose to spend the money on us. He is still holding on the 16713 Root Beer paper cut out I made for him when I was a kid so I know how much he wants that watch. In a few days I will finally get the watch. I am planning to get it to a watch maker who has a Rolex account to look at the watch. In the meantime, I am pleading the wise men of TRF for help and give me your opinions. The resolution of the pictures are not great and sometimes overblown, but please do your best to tell me if there are any red flags you see. Also I am hoping to get your opinion if the watch has been over polished and do you think I should get it polished and get a new bezel insert? Thank you so much for your help! I promise you I will repay TRF with a lot of interesting stories! Kate Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Before you polish it and get a bezel insert, verify that it is 100% genuine Rolex. There are a lot of fake and FrankenRolex's on the market and you don't want to get stuck with one. Have two independent sources open the watch and verify everything. Some folks will chime in and say "don't buy the watch, buy the seller". That does not fly by me as "Trusted Sellers' can't always be trusted because they too get stuck with lemons and can unintentionally sell them. The used Rolex market is very precarious so proceed with caution.

Yes, I am lucky enough that my mentor (a very interesting lady who rocks in a 1675 Pepsi) knows a watchmaker here in Boston. Otherwise I may need to send it to RSC and will be way over the return period.

Just got the shipment confirmation from the seller. Gosh, this is truly nail biting...

You're a great kid doing that for your Dad. While I am no expert I have to say that the am concerned about the date wheel. The 6 in '26' looks a bit too clean with minimal serif to the font. It could be the angle the photos were taken at but I looked at some older 26's and the 6 bugs me a bit. As far as the insert goes getting a better genuine condition insert is okay just keep the original one as in the future things like this can increase the monetary value. The bracelet looks a bit rounded on the edges but a good watch maker can probably improve the look of it.

OMG OMG! this is my first post on TRF! I did not expect it will get revived :D Not sure if this is bad TRF etiquette but I "moved" my questions to the Vintage board after. I did get a lot of expert's help there. I thought at that time a 16713 is considered vintage very lucky that people are so nice and did not kick me out. I sent the watch for service and got him a new bezel insert for the watch and did not have it refinished at that time. I am going to send it to Rik after Dad's honeymoon period to refinish the case. My dad likes the Root Beer a lot and wear it with the leather NATO I got him. Some pictures and wristshot of the Root Beer in this thread: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=582419 Kate |

The watch has already serviced since it was purchased. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Yeah, that's how it's supposed to look.
https://www.google.com/search?q=Rolex+16713 Click on "Images" for a history lesson. This is a vintage piece manufactured circa 1991. With all due respect, you don't know enough about vintage Rolex to call this a fake or cheap. Save that call for the experts. |

The lugs look good. Of course if handling it would be obvious but best to have it opened if not buying from a trusted source.

Besides, any genuine bezel in brown and silver is caused by fading in sunlight. The gold anodizing is the first to fade out, leaving only the aluminum color behind. Also, solid brown bezels existed on the root beer models, not just bi-color. An expert would know all of this. Here's a photo of one that has faded to silver: |

A double posted it in the Vintage board so I hope that's ok.
I really appreciate everyone's kind words and PMs. :) Sorry I wasn't responding to some of you earlier fearing I may keep bumping this thread. :P But I think it is bad etiquette for not responding too... One thing I do want to share is while I was saving & searching for this Root Beer, I have developed a deep interest (obsession) into vintage timepieces and I feel very lucky to find this forum that never ceases to amaze. |
