Apple watch outsold more watches than entire Swiss watch industry

Apple sold more watches than Rolex, Swatch, and the rest of the Swiss watch industry combined

Apple is one of the biggest watchmakers in the world.

How big? Based on newly available statistics, it now seems certain that Apple outsold the entire Swiss watch industry combined last quarter.

Yep. The company best known for making iPhones outsold Rolex, Omega, and even Swatch last quarter — combined.

That's according to Apple Watch sales estimates from industry researcher Canalys and IDC, and publicly released shipment statistics from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. Canalys estimates that Apple sold 8 million Apple Watches in the last quarter of 2017.

Apple's been making watches for four years. Switzerland has been making timepieces for centuries.

Oh come on!
How much is an iwatch compared to a Rolex????
Obviously you are going to sell more £/$200 of anything than £/$6000+ things.
This means nothing.

As an aside, Casio estimates it's just sold its 100 millionth G-Shock.

Exactly. You’re talking apples and oranges. A lot more people can afford a $500 watch then a $5,000 and up timepiece. I’ll bet Timex also sold more then all the Swiss industry combined as well.

its going to continue. Thats what happens when you sell a technology product with a finite life span of a year or two until the next one comes out to replace it. Apples and oranges.

Rolex outsold Ford full size pickups by about 300k units in 2017. I think they’re doing OK.

What would be a more interesting statistic is how many of those Apple Watch users download and use a Rolex watch face on their AW.

Lets see those apple watches become vintage, collectors items. Heck...lets see them after five year. I am sure that my Rolexes will be just as desirable after 5, 10 and even 20 years from now.

Ok, other than the statistic, what is your point? Many factors to consider and not really comparing comparable products.

Toyota sold more Camrys than Rolls Royce sold all of their models combined!

You can deduce nothing from meaningless comparisons like this.

Agree with the above comments. Also consider my wife has an Apple Watch for the fitness tracking and messaging abilities.

I use my Apple Watch for working out only. It’s good for that purpose for me. The short battery life makes me wonder why anyone would want to use it daily, but many people do.

I already have to charge my phone and my iPad daily. I refuse to add a wrist tracking device to the routine.

Mine uses her phone for fitness tracking and music when she goes out to exercise. She wears a Rolex all other times.

Congrats on how excited you are, but what are you trying say with these stats? Are we to assume this is the next quartz crisis!?

So much hostility. The guy was simply posting an article he found online. I don't think he was trying to "impress" anyone, "make a point", or "try to say anything". Talk about shooting the messenger.

Agreed. We can't live in a bubble and considering how we all love watches here, it's odd to not want to discuss all watch related news and stories, without the messenger getting shot.

My take is that it's fascinating. Most of the comments above are just talking about money, as in the AW is half the price so of course it'll sell more. Although true in that sense, we live in an age where money is easy to come by with 0% finance so an expensive watch is not out of the realms of feasibility for most people who earn an okay wage. Also, a £400 AW is expensive for most people on Earth, so it's not like a Series 1, 2 or 3 is cheap.

Also, it astonishing as a tech company at the forefront of technology combined with design has put out a watch that cost hundreds of pounds and in the space of 3 years has overtaken some of their contemporaries. That's something worth discussing and mulling over, not to be hostile to the person starting the conversation.

There have been threads previously asking if 'we' as a community may be the last generation of machanical watch enthusiasts as the next one coming through seem to be more in favour of the iwatch or other smart phone based alternative.
No problem discussing the issue, I think the OP's final sentance stating that Apple have only been making watches for 4 years compared to Switzerland's centuries was the reason the forum (including myself) got so defensive.
You are correct though, we shouldn't shoot the messenger, but maybe if the messanger could have phrased it slightly differently so it didn't seem so negative towards the Swiss watch industry.

Ahhh, I see where the confusion lies. The text in the original post was not that of the poster. He simply "copy and paste'd" the article. The link in the OP does not take you directly to the article he is referencing, however, so I can see how many would think that the words in his post were in fact his.

Here is a link to the story he quoted.

It’ll make more sense if we compare the turnover than number of sales. And honestly I never liked apple watches personally. I totally love my Mac but Apple watches are different story.

Reading the article it does say that "Apple does not give out Apple Watch sales data".

Still, last Q of 2017 means a lot of Christmas gifts that are now in the bottom of the dresser or junk drawer.

Really?? You've been here a member less than a year and probably I own more Rolex than you and you commenting if I logged onto a wrong site for sharing an article? You are in wrong sub-forum dude - this is an OPEN DISCUSSION subforum and not Rolex General Discussion subforum.

FYI - that final sentence including everything in the post is from the article and there's not a single sentence of mine anywhere. So, you want me to sugarcoat the article before posting on here?
