With SS on the rise is it even worth not just biting the bullet for a PM?

Even if I’m talking new to slightly used with the SS market seemingly booming wouldn’t it be worth just going PM if cost isn’t a major obstacle or you just want a SS? I’ve been thinking about this and historically the PMs really seem to hold a large premium over what the cost difference was new. I know there are exceptions but I saw a LV for $12.5k USD and I’d think going for a solid gold Sub a better choice. But like everything this is speculation. I mean how far are we from a $15k Sub. 7-8 years?

My thoughts as well from now on. If it’s going to be a SS I’ll get another AP or a PP one day.

The margin between SS and PM is closing quickly. At some point PM becomes very very attractive.

Yes, nowadays a PM reference becomes a viable option. Good thing, hard to beat wearing a PM Rolex

Yeah, I'm considering a WG Daytona instead of a DaytonaC.

It would depend on the model for me

I buy movements and complications, precious metals for a case belong on dress watches IMHO.

I’m seriously thinking this for my next purchase. Spend a bit more and have a PM instead.

I think it depends on where this craziness goes in the next 1-2 years. If hype/demand dies down and supply picks up , there will still be quite a gap. And for those of us fortunate enough to have a good AD relationship, or patient, SS will still be obtainable at MSRP. I got my Daytona C for MSRP... half of what the WG Daytona is. That’s quite a premium for PM.

I have one steel Rolex (116234) but my next will be a gold one. 118238 is the grail for me, so why not aim for the target sooner?

The popular hype models - Daytona, SD50, DSSD JC, Hulk, BLNR just seem a bit uninteresting to me now. Too hard to get new and absurdly overpriced when pre-owned.

I will never pay over MSRP. Therefore my problem is I find PMs considerably more expensive than SS in Rolex world. I'd rather wait for availability at AD and stick to SS.

Daytona:
ref 116500LN: EUR 11,300
ref 116519LN: EUR 26,150

I like both SS & PM and have watches in both. Seems to me PM is great if you are looking to keep the watch long term. Should you like to trade, you get hammered, in my experience.

I would never pay more tha retail price for a as sport model, the market right now has become absurd! For my next Rolex I am looking to get the white gold Daytona but at a substantial discount from an AD; Ilove the subtle yellow hue of white gold

Well thing is you would be hard pressed to have to pay over MSRP for a PM. SS Daytona’s and other SS models in other parts of the world seem to be the norm bringing the gap considerably closer. I was honestly just spitballing after seeing a $12k hulk......

I went for PMs when the SS were readily available at discounts and the PMs fell off a cliff, so now is a banner time as they are holding value better than ever too, my YG Subc is worth around 10% more than I paid 3 years ago.

It really depends on your end game. Many of use really prefer SS over PM in our watch and cost has nothing to do with it. If you see a Rolex SS as a stepping stone to a PM Rolex then now is the time to pay up and purchase a PM Rolex. Availability and pre owned prices of PM Rolex also makes it a lot easier to buy now especially anything in yellow gold. Looking at the past decade and current demand, I can not see any slowing down in the desire for SS Rolex models.

I agree, the margin is shrinking between the two. But my thought is that if SS models go up in price, talking retail here, then the PM's could also go up in price. Wouldn't it make sense for Rolex to keep the same percentage price difference between the two?

I sometimes think if Rolex increases the price of their PM models much more they'd need to justify that with a better movement than is offered in the SS model. A SS Daytona is roughly $15K, the platinum version with the exact same movement is $70K more. I know, platinum is rare, hard to work with, lots is lost in the process. Platinum is $994/ ounce, or another quote, $31,969 per kilo (2.2 pounds). I don't know how many ounces it takes to make a platinum version but it isn't nearly 3 kilos of raw platinum. It probably isn't half a kilo. So to justify that markup something inside should be different. Just a thought...

I personally have no interest in PM watches. Maybe I'm too much of a noob to all this to properly appreciate them. I love stainless steel. It's so much harder and more scratch-resistant Plus I'm really not a "bling" kind of guy. SS suits me perfectly.

Having said all that, I do understand the monetary element and availability issues. However, none of that will get a PM watch in my small but elite collection. :)

The thing about PM is that you have to buy them used or substantially discounted, or as someone mentioned, just keep it forever. Otherwise that price differential is still substantial.

I will admit that I too am leaning more toward a PM as my next watch. But whereas before $10K was my psychological limit on buying a watch, now it's $20K. But it's still not enough. I realize that we're all different here, and some folks can drop $25K on a shiny bauble without blinking, and others can't buy a used sub without working out a payment plan.

I'm somewhere in the middle of that. :)

IMO, a gold sub would be a better buy than a $12.5k LV-c. Assuming you buy right.

But, having said that...it's not a good buy if that's not what you really want.

There is no way I am paying £17k for a Ceramic SS Daytona when I can get a WG one on Oysterflex for £21k. Its a no brainer to me.

If you buy PM grey or for a good price at an AD it's not that big of a hit

And in previous years you would have expected the WG to fall to £16K but now their prices are firm.

I prefer SS as it's more durable than WG and I like the lower weight and I'm not a YG person. Money isn't the main factory... especially as you get discount on PM. You can be lucky if the AD offers you a glass water if you buy a SS lol

PM does make more sense right now especially new from the GM or a nice depreciated example in great condition. I think the hesitation of many when considering a PM Rolex is that you’re paying significantly more for the same watch with the same movement and same quality of finish. The sole exception are the DDs which will never be sold in stainless.

I think the recession also impacted people’s perception of PM watches. At a time when most people around the world were going through a really rough time, wearing YG just seemed frowned upon when compared to the ‘80s. I think this feeling has continued today with more people preferring WG and PT since they are not as conspicuous.
