Paying Markup Prices

I've been trying to find a Hulk at MSRP, which as we know is nearly impossible. Most of the AD's are so shady about their waitlist, I may just jump on one of the grey market pieces. I hate to pay the markup, but if a price increase really happens I won't feel nearly as bad. There is the chance they could update the Hulk, I happen to like the larger lugs, so i don't really care if they make them smaller. OF course they could always discontinue it which send prices crazy high, I kind of doubt that will happen though.

Anyone regret paying the grey market uncharge?

Honestly, gray market is like $10k-$10500 for excellent condition. retail + tax is only a few hundred shy of that. just hit up DSW or takuya

You could negotiate for an amount less than that in excellent condition used. I would not pay a premium for that watch, no way. But that's my opinion. The watch has very limited supply I believe and the hype is fairly new.

I recently did. Paid $700 more from a trusted seller for BNIB with my name on the card than I would have paid for AD + tax. Even if I only own the watch for 3 years (maybe I flip or outright sell), that breaks down to $19.44 month to own it now rather than waiting for a long time. I called every AD within 4 hours of me and I was told the waiting list were long. My primary AD i do business with was honest and told me they had 7 people on the list with paid deposits and it would be a long time for me to see on. That $19.44 a month is worth it to have it now. Let say I keep it for 20 years and pass it to my son. That "premium" i paid reduces $2.91 a month. Well worth it. And if there's a 5% increase this year, then I only paid a $450 premium. My time and enjoyment is worth more than my money...especially at $700.

I spend $700 a year on coffee that I ultimately pi$$ away after drinking.

Now that said, I would never pay Daytona or SkyD premiums.

After enjoying this watch for the past two months I would definitely pay some premium if I didn’t have one already. How much I don’t know, but not $12k like some greys are asking for.

I think it’s worth paying the premium and avoiding the hassle if you can get one for close to what it would cost at the AD plus tax ($9500-9800). I went the AD route last month, but had to put some time and effort into finding the BLNR. I was able to get one out the door for ~$8600 if you consider my credit card rewards points. Since finding mine i have yet to receive any calls from any of the 20-30 ADs that have me on “the list.”

If you want the watch and feel you can’t source it through an AD, then it’s not an unreasonable upcharge.

I won't pay a premium but if you're not willing to wait and ok with dropping the extra cash, go for it.

This makes me laugh.

We are deeply embedded in what has to be one of the most irrational hobbies known to man, the watch enthusiast. Paying thousands upon thousands of dollars for a watch...yet bring up the topic of paying a little more so that you can actually own and enjoy a watch that you can't get (for whatever reason)...and you would think you're suggesting high treason. Good grief.

I've never regretted spending whatever I've spent on a watch. The moment I do, I think it's time to find another hobby.

I bought my SD43 last May with surcharge, but I really wanted the watch last year, as I am a Tech diver, and I was turning 50 in 2017, like the SD. I think if you really want it, buy it now and don't wait, as this is what money is for... We are almost Basel time, and Rolex could discontinue the hulk, who knows? Or as the rumour goes, have an overall 20% increase. So, if you can afford, just go for it, who knows what tomorrow is made of? Unless you are a speculator, or a flipper, than don't do it.. But if you are a keeper, and it makes you really happy. Happiness is priceless, you won't loose anything in the long run if you enjoy it and can afford it.. ;-)

I totally agree, though I understand how the OP feels. My parents didn’t have two nickels to rub together when I was growing up so a few dollars meant a lot to me during that part of my life and it’s hard to forget that. On the other hand if I was concerned about a few hundred dollars, I probably shouldn’t be spending that much on a watch!

Buy it now and put it behind you.

Paying Markup Prices

It’s a novelty watch perfect for St Patrick’s Day or an accessory for a Kermit the Frog costume on Halloween.

Having said that...you must still want one in your collection. If you want it badly, pay up.

Whether you derive pleasure from actually wearing it or just looking at it in a safe, only you can decide if the premium worth it to you?

If it's the watch you want get it! If you're planning to sell for profit, debatable.

More than likely, the watch will either be discontinued or we'll see a price increase before the LVs are regularly in AD windows again

I would pay the premium if I wanted one. I don’t have the relationships to get one through an AD and it’s not worth my time to call around and find one.

If you enjoy the chase, keep searching. If you value your time, pay the premium.

I used to be totally against paying a penny over MSRP however I now factor in my joyment of the watch over its lifetime which makes the difference minimal over the years
Couple of traffic tickets or eating out with the family a couple of times a month is way more than the difference over time

^^This is it. Time. It’s not worth the time.

I needed to pick up a BLNR as a gift a few months ago and, needless to say, going the AD route was going to take months in itself.

Retail is $8950, plus sales tax - which I’d have to pay at the AD to just walk in and grab one - would’ve brought it to $9850 out the door. But they aren’t/weren’t available that easily.

So, it took me six texts with a TS and about twenty minutes to find one BNIB, with clean blank papers, and overnight insured shipping to a third party for 1.6% more than walking in to an AD and waiting weeks or months. Even if it were available at the AD, 1.6% more and I never stopped what I was doing, easily sent the texts and the monies, and done.

It’s all about time. What’s your time worth?

I personally cannot pay over MSRP for a watch or car, whereas my colleague doesn't think twice and does it often. Everyone has there own feelings, do what you feel. Do what makes you happy.

Here is the real question

Do you want it more and more because you can't find one?

These used to sit in cases unsold for long periods of time.

SOME dealers tried to hype it up, but overall it was not a tough reference in the least.

Rolex has sold more LV since they went on "allocation" than before...consider that..FOMO is a big factor here.

Think about why you really want it. Is it because you want it or is it the idea of having one...
