Gmt provenance

A friend has inherited his fathers GMT. His father was a pilot in WWII and then a pilot for Pan Am after the war. He thinks his father purchased the watch around 1962, is there any way to find out when and where he bought it.

Rolex has never released any official info on dating a timepiece. But the forum members have compiled a list that will get you close to the "When" by serial number.

As to the where I would have no idea on how to trace that without paperwork. If he has the box it came with there may be paperwork/warranty in the bottom of the box that may help. But I think thats the only way on the "Where".

Yeah that's what I told him as well but I'm no expert so I thought a second opinion would be nice. thanks so much for the info.

Please post some pics if you can, depending on what has been done to the watch, he may have a valuable watch.

I only have one pic and the quality is pretty low so wouldn't be worth posting. I'm certain it is your basic 1675 with a really great back story. He will never sell it regardless, it's going to his son when the time comes. It's a really great watch that's for sure.

60's GMT's would have a date-stamp inside the case back.

Love stories like this and happy he's keeping it for his son. Unfortunately no way to trace provenance other than dating the watch using serial and case back date stamp.

There are several variations of the early 1960's GMT's that he may want to be aware of for insurance valuation purposes.

Thanks I did inform him of the potential value given it’s age, but when I got a chance examine it a little better I found that he had it serviced and the dial and hands were replaced. The service center never informed him of the devaluation that would cause. Not cool. Still a great watch nonetheless.
