Officer down Highlands Co Sheriffs Office

Deputy Sheriff William Gentry succumbed today to a gunshot wound sustained the previous night while responding to an animal abuse call at a home in the 200 block of Baltimore Way in which a homeowner's cat had been fatally shot with a pellet gun.

He and a deputy he was training had responded to the victim's home. During the investigation Deputy Gentry went to the suspect's home, a convicted felon who lived next door, to make contact with him. As he stood at the front door the suspect opened fire on him, shooting him in the head.

The subject was taken into custody at the scene and charged with numerous counts.

Deputy Gentry was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his wound the following day.

Deputy Gentry had served with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office for nine years. He is survived by a brother, who also serves with the agency.

Godspeed Deputy Gentry, may you Rest In Peace.

RIP Deputy.

I would have hoped that his trainee would have Swiss cheesed the bad guy. But who knows what the circumstances were. I guess the door was closed and he did not have a visual.

RIP Deputy Gentry.

Three years ago when my son joined the NYPD one of the first things he was given after graduation from the academy was a smart phone which enables officers to pull up criminal history at a specific address, including individuals with warrants, parolees residing at the location, history of radio runs at the location and a whole lot more. A wonderful piece of technology that did not exist back when I joined! Can give you an idea what the hell you are getting yourself into!

RIP, officer.

Tim, hope you don't mind but
I'd like to add to this a memorial to one of our local officers. An officer killed in the line of duty is tragic in any circumstance but is esp. felt hard
in smaller towns, communities like where I live. And so it has been-many local citizens have “K27” decals, the number of his patrol car, on their vehicles to honor this officer, killed in May 2015. He'll never be forgotten, at least around here:

Godspeed

I am saddened to hear another officer has made the ultimate sacrifice. We are in a war with felons and soon-to-be felons it seems. No political statement made - just the alarming rate of escalating violence against our LE officers.

I can’t say anything better than Pres. Lincoln in 1864 to Mrs. Bixby upon the loss of her 5 sons in battle.

November 21, 1864
Executive Mansion
Washington,

Mrs. Bixby
Boston, Massachusetts:

Dear Madam:
I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln
