This sounds like a 3 minute Rolex commercial. But still, it was interesting to see. Thanks.

Well in the real world that's all it is pure marketing nothing more.

Yeah, no kidding. Rolex watches are expensive because they've become Veblen goods, not because it costs very much to make a mass-produced Submariner.

That probably accounts for around 60-80% of the value. The remainder is paying to have the crown on the dial....

It takes a year to make a Rolex? So they started making the new SSBLRO last year?

No, that's a misunderstood marketing claim. "A year" to make something is a year's worth of working hours, or about 2800 hours. If you add up the time in hours that it takes to make each individual component, you'd likely hit around 3000 hours for an entire Rolex watch.

A year in marketing speak isn't 365 days but they know this is what everyone will assume.

Which is also pure marketing.

IF it really took a years worth of labour hours a Rolex Sub wouldn’t cost 9.000 euro, but maybe 190.000 euros.

At the end of the video, the presenter says that "Ladies' two-tone Datejust" is the most sold model of all Rolexes. Hmm, I didn't know that. Interesting!

If they're so expensive then why do they let me work on them?

Thanks for sharing that video. Very interesting. I think this is the perfect video to show someone who isn't into or doesn't understand the appeal of Rolex. Someone who is asking "Why are you so into these watches??".

Rolex watches ARE expensive imo. Sure, there are much more expensive brands, but there are also lots of cheaper ones which will do the job just fine. Imo, It's kinda like owning a BMW or Mercedes in the car world. There are cheaper cars that will get you from point A to B just the same, but you want something nicer, more comfortable, better quality, and will have some style!

They have a look like no other? - they look like all round watches, she's thinking of the Genta watches. And the can see it from a distance line. God, this is corny.

A friend shared this with me last night and it was painful to watch. Part of this is true but marketing and supply / demand is the main reason.

Marketing has caused most Rolexes to sky rocket and now with a strong economy and lack of supply will continue to go up. The price jumps over the past 10 years has nothing to do with what was said in the video.

Now i got into watches for most of the points made in the video. I can agree that can lead to being expensive, but without the marketing you would never have heard of Rolex.

Take Omega I think they make some very nice watches and craftsmanship is decent. Marketing and supply is the reason they are still behind.

They have tried to adjust with higher prices and boutiques and you still see almost every model being able to be found from a trusted seller at 30-40% off.

Interesting video, I still think they are expensive. Marketing has a good amount to do with it.

Well someone has to pay those high Swiss salaries and marketing campaigns all over the most prestigious sports events.

Yeah, they're decent quality.

I struggle with the idea that it takes 1 year to make a Rolex. Not sure if it's marketing BS or a genuine fact, go figure.

They crank out approximately 3000 watches per day. It's 100% marketing.

i think what it means is that if you make each part of the watch sequentially, it would take one year to finish.
