What is up with the Yachmaster?

This probably been discussed before, so apologies.

But why does it seem like the Yachtmaster (I am generalizing of course) is not very popular and seems to have low resale value?

I have a Hulk, Batman and a 16622 2002 Yachmaster and to be frank.....I think I enjoy wearing the Yachmaster more than the other two. Nice weight, so comfortable and just looks stunning. The dial and bezel are so striking.

The newer Yachmasters with the updated clasp and different versions look amazing. I'd love to get a blue dial one, but I can't help to think as soon as I buy it....boom it went down a few grand inn value.

What are your thoughts on the Yachtmaster and why does it seem like not many dig it, or the re sale value is so low? Thanks!

It looks a little feminine. Also, it's neither sporty nor dressy, so it's kind of in an awkward position.

I *think* it's the most under the radar Rolex and it's the one i've drooled over for 15 years.

it is quite a bit more expensive than the mainstream tool Rolex and also not very recognizable as a "Rolex," which, i hate to say it, makes all the people buying a Rolex for the sake of being recognized as one, turns off from buying a YM.

Thus not so popular.

1. Not recognizable as Rolex
2. Plenty more expensive
3. People who don't buy a Rolex to enjoy it and are overly concerned about the resale value won't touch it

I think it's a perfect watch. Can dress up or down. Gorgeous in any color combination.

YM style has not been changed for many years now, but back in the days maybe around 2005, they were more popular that you could see more YM posts

Beautiful watch, my 1st Rolex was a YM which I passed on to my son.

What is up with the Yachmaster?

It's similar to the story of the superior fiver Polar Explorer II master race. People just don't get it.

I have the rhodium version. It is a beautiful piece, imo. I've never come across another, "in the wild."

I really like the blue dialed version, personally. I'd buy one and it is on my "list".

Not sure why it doesn't get the love. The only thought that comes to mind is that it lacks the classical Rolex style in the sense that it's not a Submariner, Explorer, Daytona etc. Most of the non-traditional and non-sports watches do lag on the resale side.

Great watch though - enjoty it! Love it on a Red rubber or perlon strap.

I’ve always admired the yacht master and think they’re beautiful. Here’s the Rose Gold TT in the sunshine. AD was kind enough to let me take it outside to see the sunburst dial in action.

I'll give you my personal opinions.

1. Rolex sports watches connote a history of toughness as tool watches (despite them being luxury goods now). The word "Yacht" and the design being a shinier submariner don't jive with that history in my mind.
2. I would worry about the durability of the platinum bezel.

I agree they are beautiful watches, but something about the name doesn't feel right to me. Stupid reasoning, but it's what I think about. I might change my mind if they started putting the ceramic bezel from the rose gold model into steel watches. That bezel is amazing.

I wouldn't get too concerned whether others "dig it" or not. It's your opinion that really counts.

What is up with the Yachmaster?

It has been said above by SG56, those that want a statement watch so everyone knows its a Rolex wont buy it. its stylings are different from the Rolex standard, DJ's and Divers.

It blows any boring black Sub out of the water, no pun intended, visually speaking.

oh I know. I was just curious as lately I have been enjoying it more. Maybe because the summer and nice weather are finally hear in NYC and it just looks so nice in the sun, and the lume is amazing.

I have a feeling that when Rolex adds the 3235 and perhaps a few Ceramic bezel options, it will be a lot more popular.

I do not like ceramic bezels. This is one of the reasons why I own the YM. I hope they don't turn this into just another sport model.

The YM is basically a Submariner light. The reason it's not as popular - James Bond didn't wear one.

There was a time in it’s infancy that the Daytona wasn’t popular and didn’t sell well.

My wife set a very high limit for me to select a birthday watch. Could have been a precious metal watch welll within my limit. I went to the AD expecting to buy the SD43 that was being offered. I didn’t like the Sea Dweller, looked at a bunch of watches, and selected the blue dial Yacht Master. I don’t flip watches so resale value is meaningless as is the model name. I tried on the Sub Date but it just didn’t fit well. The Yacht Master looked and felt great. It feels a lot like my GMT II.

I think the 40mm YM with blue dial is beautiful. It's too close in size, shape and dial to my Hulk. I went for a Z-Blue because it is different and looks bigger because of the thinner bezel. Each to our own. With unlimited funds, three arms and more days in the week I'd have a 40mm YM.

I think the TT will keep the PM bezels. We technically don’t have a SS offering, so perhaps it will be added as an alternative and include ceramic.

It's a dressed up Submariner, more expensive but without the best parts like a ceramic insert (or even aluminum), brushed center links and glidelock clasp, so it's a nice watch but not for me.

It's a Submariner Light that costs $4000 more than a Submariner Date.

I think there's a pretty simple reason for the Yachtmaster's lack of popularity - it's overpriced.
