How Reliable are Porsches? I'm thinking about getting a 911 cab "S". 997 body style. Should I get a preowned (07/08) or new? I was thinking about getting a preowned one to save $10-$15K to get a daytona SS but is concerned with maintenance issues. So how reliable are these porsches?

I currently own an 2006 Carrera S Cab w/ 9400 miles purchased used about 18 months ago (never been in for a single repair) and I just took delivery on a new 2009 Turbo Cab.

My first Porsche was a 1978 model and I owned it 9 years. It was the most dependable and break down free vehicle I ever owned. All of the late model Porsches come with a 4 year 50K warranty.

TRF member "ohsixx" (Mark) has a beautiful 2006 Carrera S Cab. Hopefully he will see this thread and render his opinion as well and maybe if we're lucky he'll post up some pics of his ride...........

TRF member "Stephens" is rumored to have a Carrera 4S so maybe he might post up some pics as well.

I've heard of a few people who had quite a few problems with the boxster and cayman. Don't know about the carreras. You think it's a good idea to purchase the extended warranties on the carreras?

How do you like your new ride? It must feel like night and day with that much extra horses? and what are you planning to do with the old one? any pics of both?

Cayman owner here. 22k miles and not a single issue. Nada, zilch. And I drive it like I stole it. Never heard of any Boxter problems either. All P-cars are built to the same standards. (TONS more reliable than the CL500 I traded for it...)

I drove several 997's when I was car shopping. Great cars. Go for it! You won't be sorry!

I'm looking at a new 911 myself. I've never had a lick of problems with any Porsche I've owned - they are as reliable and as unbelievably bulletproof as the watches this forum is named for. There is no substitute if you want fun, excitement and the confidence of knowing you're driving a superior vehicle.

BTW - I've always used my Porsches as daily drivers - in summer, spring, fall and winter. Yup, even in a blizzard a P-car will go where SUVs fear to tread. Just get the right tires.

Oh, and nice 987 there, Jim - that car in Arctic Silver is the best looking car Porsche ever made. And the 2.7 is the most underrated sportscar of all time.

Porsches are soooooo much fun. It is more than a car; it becomes a life style. You won't believe how many friends you will make. Because of my car, I literally know hundreds of people that I otherwise would probably not have ever met.

I was looking for a fun car about 5 years ago. A work associate suggested a Porsche 928S. After viewing a website by a 928S owner, who documented all his expenses, I moved on to something else. He spent over $20K on repairs and maintenance, IIRC, over 2 yrs. I eventually got into a BMW Z3, which I still have. I never associated "bulletproof" with Porsche -- just the opposite. But any vehicle will wear and break if constantly driven hard, so I may jump into the Porsche pool in the future.

5 years ago, you were looking at, at best, an 8 year old car - and a high-end racing machine at that. If your friend was spending over 10K on repairs and maintenance in a year, one wonders why he wouldn't have leased a Ferarri, or at least gotten a new Porsche. I've simply never heard of that kind of expense for a Porsche, unless it's a track car. My use of the term "bulletproof" was meant in relationship to other cars in its class, and I stand by it, especially for the newer ones. But BMW Z3s (my favorite Z, BTW) are a lot of fun, too.

I'm leaning toward the straight 911 Coupe, but there's an S that keeps calling my name on the lot. I'm gonna make my decision soon!

That said, the 2009 Cayman S is getting reviews that say, in effect, that the 987 platform now outperforms the 911. With DFI, LSD and PDK (although I like a stick), that 987S really sounds like a winner. If they'd only put DFI on the base (now a 2.9), I think I might save 30K or so and get that. My only real problem with the 911 is that it is just not as pretty, or as fun to drive, than the 987 IMHO. But it is the iconic Porsche, and it stands on its own as a great GT car, which is what I'm looking for.

Unfortunately all Porsches & BMW's are not created equal...........

928's & 924's were never considered as one of Porsche's better creations and were for the most part shunned by hardcore Porsche loyalists. They were always a distant second to all 911's.

I owned an early model BMW 750il (12 cyclinder) and it was the worst car mechanically I ever owned. It was also one of the best looking and everywhere I drove it people always commented on what a great looking car it was (smoke silver w/ chrome wheels). The BMW rode great, handled like a dream and was just a fantastic car to drive. The problem was it spent a third of its life and the BMW dealer for repairs. They never had it less than a week and I don't think I hardly ever even made it a month without something failing. On a 750 il there is no such thing as a part less than a $100 including little things like an electric window toggle switch.

My experience with 911's have definitely been more of the "bulletproof" variety

I think I would be happy with a base Cayman, but my buddy is pushing me to the S or even a 911.
IMO, the Base Cayman is an affordable daily driver. Once I step up to the S or 911, the price gets a bit "up there"

the carreras would have upto 9 years of factory warranty and extended warranty combined. So there shouldn't be warranty issues with the pre-owned 997 models. The cost of maintenance will not be toyota like but that why you spend extra money on - the driving pleasure.

that would be the 3 years factory warranty (im pretty sure...) and the owner have the option of buying extended warranty for upto 6 years, so in total, 9 years. thats what i was told when i was buying a 2000 model MK1 GT3 from a Porsche centre in 2006 in melbourne. (didnt end up getting it, decided to put the money into another property investment, and then relocated to London instead )

Here in the U.S. the factory warranty is 4 years 50K miles. You can buy an extended warranty for 7 years and 100K miles but the 7 years is from the "in service" date meaning from the date the vehicle was first sold to the first buyer. So based on that you're only getting an additional 3 years and 50K miles.

Things may be different where you're from.........

Sell it....... Cabriolets typically sell better in the spring when the weather warms up.

Best to buy a Cabriolet new is in the winter and the best to sell one is in the spring. That's why I just bought the 2009 Turbo this month.

BTW. how different do they drive/feel to you? They're probably like night and day due to the difference in HP. Herfdude, nice pickup!
