Inspirational story

I worked in triage in my ER tonight. Saw a guy signing his wife in, and caught a glimpse of an Oyster bracelet from across the room. When they came into the triage office, I said "Nice DeepSea!" He said, "Thanks! Nice Sub!" Apparently he noticed mine while I was signing in the patient ahead of them.

We did the medical thing, then talked toys for a bit. He owns a concrete pumping apparatus that can pump 300 cubic yards of concrete in an hour. He said that business was good enough to buy the missus a Corvette, and he always wanted a Rolex.

Guess how he saved for it?

Saving quarters in a 5-gallon water jug.

Man, that's patience and dedication. He sure was proud of that watch, and we had a great conversation about careers, dreams, and goals.

Have a good Sunday, Ladies and Gents!

Don't feel bad, Jeff. I bought mine in a roundabout way. A coworker needed cash for a nasty divorce and was selling a TT Serti Sub CHEAP. I bought it cash, then flipped it for a stainless Sub and enough cash to pay off the wife's car.

I'm currently investing for the next one, now- Nurse Practitioner school and yes, a jug of change.

Thinking a classic pre-owned TT DJ with white dial and gold romans.

Great story but I'm afraid I'm totally opposite.

I have no patience and I want everything now. LOL

Impressive saving strategy ! :)

Working in an ER you must be very lucky to be wearing a wristwatch handling patients ..... ‘bare below the elbows’ is pretty common these days due to infection control !

Interesting concept, and I do see how the implementation of it could improve infection control. Forgive me if I do not mention it to management, however!

Pretty sure it's a rule in the OR, but rules are a lot more lax in the ER.

I split my change up, and got about 5cm deep of quarters in a 1.75L Jack Daniel's bottle. Got a way to go, if that's how I'm paying for my next watch...

I love this story. This is also my #1 complaint against the current shortage and all those who cheer "The Strategy." This guy worked his tail off, saved diligently, and if he walked into an AD today he would be told "we will put you on the list." That blows.

Thanks for sharing.

This is a way better story than the usual, "I wasn't planning on picking up a watch this week but went into my AD and came home with 2 Rolexes and a Patek" post.

Great story! Not every owner of a Rolex is dripping with money. He will probably appreciate his watch more than most.

Thanks, Brandrea!

Yeah, Headshrinker, he was THRILLED that someone else appreciated it. It's my guess that watch will be covered in "daily experience, mileage, and stories" before long, just as it should.

Wow, love the story and shows with time and perseverance great things will come your way.

With that said, I’m thinking I should go ahead and start my BLRO water jug fund now !!

Nice story.

But $100 notes are lighter and take up much less space.

Cubic yards! What an idiotic unit of volume. Come on the metric system. One cubic metre of water weighs one tonne. Obviously a good idea.

Exactly, not to mention you have rich folks in here wishing Rolex would raise prices.

Wondering what my wife is saving for now - we have a big 5 gallon jug in the basement storage room half filled with only quarters...
