I have two interns working with me these days. Both are girls in their early twenties. Fairly normal for the most part.

With that said, half the time I have no idea what the hell they are saying. Full disclosure, I am 36. So about a 15 year age difference.

We usually talk about random things during down time and work attire came up recently. I'm dressed casual for the most part, usually chinos and a polo when it's hot. One of them commented that my attire looked like a "fit". She said this multiple times and eventually I stopped her and asked what she was saying. She said "you know, like outfit".

Then one day we were casually talking about relationships and how different it is when you're in your twenties compared to when you're in your thirties. This time she kept saying "ships", as in "I don't usually like being in ships".

I'm scratching my head wondering when the hell we started talking about boats.

This time is was "relationships". Then they both acted like what they were saying was perfectly normal and I was the crazy one because I didn't understand.

Seems like a trend and now I've officially become a man who doesn't understand the kids

TBH, I'm 26 and would have been confused by "ships" and "fit" as well....

I'm 34. I realized I was old when I had to ask "what the heck is 'insta'?" Oh, Instagram. I guess they are just too lazy to completely form full words...

Yeah, welcome to the wonderful, weird world of your late 30s. Too old to understand people in their 20s, too young to really understand people in their 40s/50s.

I can usually pick up on the new lingo based on context, but then there are things I will never understand. Like vocal frying:

I agree with that! Drives me nuts. I make an effort not to say "like". I feel it "dumbens" whoever it is that is using the word.

Hey! As a fellow 36 year old, I think we still prefer to be considered in our MID 30's

And I agree.. I do feel old at times

I was trying to figure out what the defining threshold of becoming "old" is and the best I could come up with is when in a fair fight you can kick the a$$ of a healthy, male adult who's exactly half your age and people are surprised enough to congratulate you no matter who's side they were on.

Don't forget "Definitely". Definitely this. Definitely that. "This kitchen definitely needs a renovation". "I'm definitely going shopping". "That pass into coverage definitely sucked". What began as light joking imitating Rain Man has now spread to become ingrained in the larger population's vocabulary of anyone who was school age or younger when the movie come out. People don't even know they're doing it as adults, and now their kids do it too. It's like "like". I'd rather they brought back "totally" than live in a world with everyone conversing in Rain Manspeak.

With the advent of the internet, social media, and text messages, the language is changing at a pace never before seen.

The first jolts regarding aging are when you realize that college-age people don't recognize you as a peer ("Excuse me, sir.") and the slang and pop culture become foreign and arcane.

These things don't however make one old, as has already been noted.

That's okay, because college is still only advanced larval stage followed by pupas until age 30 to 35, so they aren't really people yet anyway.
