Video of thieves in action Barcelona.
Hard to call, but maybe could have been more aware what was about to happen? He was cautious from the start, wish he could have seen the guy getting closer out of the corner of his eye. These guys didn't seem like they would be too violent but took an easy opportunity? At least it's something to learn from.
Edit: THIS IS A VIDEO OF A VIDEO PLAYING ON ANOTHER SCREEN. That's why there is movement during the video. ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiBOJ_hT67c |

That watch broke off pretty easily. Seems weird to me. The movement of the camera filming it is suspect, too, the way it followed the thieves. I wonder how real this is.

Someone was filming the entire thing like they knew it was going to happen. Odd.

It looks like someone just recorded footage from a security camera.

Guys like that know exactly what they're doing. I'm sure its not a weak clasp, bracelet etc. Just like pick pockets in NYC. It's easy to them. Probably been doing it for years.
Scum. |

Spring bars don't resist and the watch had leather strap as far as I could see. Sorry but the guy was naive IMHO. Three strangers, one of them stop to try a handshake for no reason. Other two come closer. This should have been a maximum alert moment.

I've had two friends get their watches stolen in Barcelona as well. I would never take any watch there.

When someone comes up to you, you try to remain polite, you don't just walk away or go inside (''maybe I insult them''), that's the way people think. And I'm not making this up. Just walk up to a stranger and look how close you can get (in their face) before they even say something. You can go FAR. That's why it's easy for criminals. |

Guy made a serious mistake of rolling up his sleeves on his long sleeve shirt. I never broadcast my watch in European cities, especially Barcelona. I've had several attempts at pickpocket Gypsies in Barcelona. Fortunately, I managed to move away before the person picked my iPhone from my pocket. I'll be in Eastern Europe next week and will be taking my Explorer II with me and will always have a long sleeve shirt on and/or a jacket that hides my watch -- what they can't see, they can't steal.

Seems to be a problem in Barcelona. Had it happen to a cousin and a friend.

Was in Barcelona a month ago and didn’t carry anything on me but an ID and a few Euros. Almost everyone I know has been pickpocketed there. Going to Rome and on a mediteranian Greek cruise soon. I’m planning on taking my watch and it will be way too hot for jackets or long sleeves.

I’ve videoed with my iPhone a security video screen when I’ve needed to quickly show it to a judge for a quick warrant or court order, that movement is from the second recording.
While my Exp II is nowhere near as expensive as the watch that was stolen, Ive worn my Exp II in multiple African countries and parts of Europe without incident. The pic is Accra, Ghana. In Moscow I’ve kept it hidden while in Novokuznetsk no worries. Just be situationally aware. |

Unless your watch is insured, I'm not sure why anyone would want to take their watch to a country they're unfamiliar with. It just causes extra stress and concern.
I try not to take any jewelry or watches on my trips. |
