Seiko 5 added to the family.

My Seiko 5 arrived today so I quickly snapped some pix thanks to enablement by our leader Stavrodos.

A birthday present for son Rick who is cracking 38 this week.

A work watch for him

I can wear large watches Adam but this one is BIG.

Fortunately Rick will wear this easy.

I really chose it for the dial. The auto movement, hacking and day/date features were a bonus.

Excellent quality under loupe and the rotor has bearings.

Amazing value at the price point.

Nice watch. Congrats!

How big is it? 45mm? The shape resembles the Seiko Turtle.

A real beauty! I’ve always wondered what the 5 refers to. Anyone know?

There are differing opinions on what the “5” criteria actually were, but the most commonly cited seem to be: Automatic movement; Diaflex (unbreakable mainspring); Diashock shock resistance; Day-Date function and Water Resistance. These were all pretty big deals for an affordable watch when the first Seiko 5 appeared in the 1960s.

They didn't always say "5" on the dial. Here's one of mine from 1965, that has the "5" on the back. Note the "Diashock" on the bottom of the dial.

Thanks Adam. I should have known you'd have an answer! What a smart looking watch, btw!!

Great looking watch Eddie, I'm glad I inspired you

It is a large dial watch but relatively thin and sits quite flat on ones wrist so it is very easy wearing even if one has a small wrist.

Great gift, Dad! I've seriously thought about getting the grey or the blue one SRPB21K1. I really like those gradient dials.
