Info from a visit to my AD...

Took my Daytona in for it's one-year checkup to the AD the other day, they are fantastic and everytime I go in I am welcomed and enjoy chatting with the sales people. According to them:

SS Daytona's are NOT any easier to get at ADs, the nice saleslady I was talking to (who was wearing a GMT II-C by the way) said she was jealous because even SHE couldn't get one. Not sure if I belive her but I guess it's possible, with the economy the way it is SS Daytonas are definitely easier to get and coming down in price with the grey dealers, but does that mean they're easier to get from ADs?

Rolex WILL have a Coke (and I'm sure Pepsi, although didn't ask specifically) version of the GMT-II C. She said probably this year, and you MIGHT even see a prototype at Basil. This is all speculation, but I wouldn't be suprised and it got me pretty excited! I really miss my old GMT and the only reason haven't purchased a replacement is because I loved the red-black look so much.

Definitely, you DON'T want to have your Rolex professionally polished more then a couple times, i.e. live with the nicks and scratches and have it polished out during it's RSC service (5 years or so). The watchmaker said the cases are good for between three and five good polishes, after that the whole case takes on a dull look. These watches are designed to last 25 to 30 years, so polishing them every 5 makes sense.

The DSSD is becoming more available and they had one in the back room, not quite to being on display yet, but for the longest time they couldn't even get one for their best customers. I kinda got the impression that she was hinting sales of the Deep Sea were not what Rolex anticipated, so there were more available.

Milguass was the same story, they actually had one in the case for the first time I've ever seen one, (no, it wasn't a greenie).

So, I guess that's about it. Nothing I think is exceptionally extraordinary, but kind of interesting chat nonetheless.

Just the thought of a GMT IIC with the black/burgundy bezel gets me excited. That might very well be a must have for me, if only they would get rid of those horrible polished center links, I guess I would have to do it myself. Thanks for the info., now we have to wait and see if it's correct.

I've read various posts on this being technically very difficult and that replacement ceramic bezels costing a thousands bucks. It'll be interesting to see if they become available as aftermarket parts and how much it might cost.

I'm not sure if a Coke or Pepsi bezel would look good on the IIc with the green GMT hand and dial writing. A green/black bezel would probably look great.

I had a salesman tell me that SS Daytonas go for 15k and that it's hard for them to get one. He said he wanted to get one but couldn't. He also told me Daytonas are reserved for customers that spend 50k at their store. I laughed at that idea.

If he wanted to get one for 15k, I will be gladly hunting one down and flipping it to him...lol.

No, No Longer. I live in SoCal. Los Angeles area. They are not easy to come by but definitely not impossible i.e. one year ago. No longer going for 13.5K or 15K mark(crazy). That salesman is trying to blow smoke up your "whoo whoo". You can get one at MSRP but not something you can walk into an AD and see it in the display. But you can get it at MSRP now.

These watches are designed to last for 25 or 30 years? Wish to He** I'd known that before I bought 4 of them. So much for leaving any of them to my grandchildren. Should have bought a Patek. Rolex should say " You don't own a Rolex, You're just passing on a piece of tinfoil to the next generation".

If they do the black/burgundy bezel, I hope they'll discontinue the black with the green hand. At least that won't KILL the value of my GMT IIc.

I was at that AD on Christmas Eve and they had that DSSD in the display case. I checked it and it was bigger, thicker and heavier than I thought from the pictures.

Yes it would be interesting to see a GMT IIc with such a bezel. However: No change that they will cut the polished centre links. They are introducing it to the new sub too.

Nah...I wouldn't worry too much about that #. When you break it down and consider the components that make up the watch, I see no reason why the watch can't go on for many generations (assuming normal use & regular service). I'm throwing the BS flag on that 25-30 yr number...it's not like Rolex materials will magically turn into dust at that point yet a watch like a PP will somehow keep on going.

Oh yeah, absolutely right, the 25 to 30 year thing is a minimum. How many times have we all seen/heard of Rolex's 50, 60 70 years old or more that still functioned perfectly. I'm sure I'll be able to pass mine down to my son... oh wait, I don't have any children....

Anyway, I was rather surprised by the comment:

I own a 1680 Date Submariner, bought brand new in 1977, and a Date also bought brand new in 1982. Both never serviced, and ticking perfectly as in their first days. The Sub only shows some scratches received during his honorable career, in which was used as my only watch during a lot of years.

I Also own a c. 1945 Oyster manual movement, which I bought second hand, and works perfectly, despite its age. Imagine: it´s older than me, and I´m 60!

I guess Rolex got a much more long life expectancy, if not really abused, and the owner can feel assured to be able to pass it to his future generations, who will continue enjoying it as a fine time piece received from their old predecesors.

Thanks again for sharing your info, and my above comments are just to tell you about my experience with Rolex, a brand I´m a fan of since my teens.

I was at the RM in the Fashion Valley Mall (not sure if you're referring to the same AD) and they had a DSSD a while back...in the back room. Tried that sucker on and it is indeed a beast. I also asked about a Daytona and the salesman said I had to spend $10k to be considered for one...he then said that if I wanted to put a deposit on one along with any other Rolex sports model...that'd work too. ;)
