Complications/precious metal dilemma

I have owned several APs previously including an AP perpetual calendar royal oak which I wore is my day-to-day watch for several years. About a year and a half ago I traded it out and got a Rolex platinum day date 40.

The reasons for the change were complicated. I found that the sub dials were getting more difficult to read as I get older, I was somewhat concerned about paying so much money for a service, the finish always drove me crazy when ever there is any swirly. And lastly, I wore the perpetual calendar as an homage to the original jumbo. Then AP had to go and screw it all up and make it 41 mm and put a 52 week ring on it. Sacrilege!

Anyway, I have generally been pretty happy with the Rolex and platinum. It’s easy to read, tough as nails, simple disservice and it is after all, all platinum. You really never need to take it off your wrist. My regular dealer had a new white faced AP perpetual calendar on his site which fortunately sold removing the temptation. But lo and behold, he’s got another one and it’s calling my name.

But the question becomes:

Would you trade complications from holy Trinity for precious metal?

Jace - the day date is gorgeous. The platinum one is even more so. A true true legend of the watch world. I am going to buy a rose gold one for sure soon. In terms of recognition, it outguns most watches.

However I struggle to drop £50k on a Rolex which is what it costs in platinum I think. Its just way to much money for a brand that sells most of its watches at an average likely well under £10k. The gold one is about £27k which is still a fair amount and thats right at the upper end of my Rolex budget limit.

At that kind of money I would much rather have an AP or Patek. The AP PC is also very high up on my wish list

Don’t get me wrong, there is of course beauty in heavy metals, but ultimately making a case and bracelet from gold or platinum is simple work compared to a QP movement.

So on one hand, an object of desire if you will, exclusive and expensive, but only made so through its materials and souped up pricing. On the other a true work of mechanical art which derives its value from craftsmanship, know-how, complexity to manufacture and heritage.

Love the platinum DD (wish the bezel was fluted) but when it comes to metal vs complications - there is no choice for me. Complications always, especially when it comes to AP.

Sounds like you know what you want already, I’d say go ahead and get it. Otherwise you’ll be kicking yourself in the butt, doesn’t hurt to have 2 watches.

I’m sure you’re also looking for justification to get the AP, you’ve posted in the right place.

Jace.. been a while you own the 228206. love to hear your thoughts on the DD comparing back to your AP PC and you have any regrets on getting the DD?

Coming from someone who likes role and AP, PC for sure. Platinum DD is cool, but that P is drop dead gorgeous
