DayDate 40 or Datejust 41?

One is gold, quite limited in numbers, and top of the Rolex cake. The other, sold in large numbers, a routine Rolex, good daily-driver but nothing special.
But here's the thing; the latest 41mm Datejust with Jubilee is a real looker, a gorgeous watch. I have one, and when I went to buy a DayDate 40m, I was taken aback by how little extra it seemed to offer, visually, or in build quality. So I didn't buy it, and saved a lot of money.
Daft? Maybe, it's not what I expected. Interestingly , my wife thought the same. I have a gold Daytona so perhaps that aspect, the precious metal thing, didn't worry me much.
Have Rolex made the DJ just a bit too good?

Well the DD40 as well as coming in PM also has the lovely President bracelet so I'd say it offers more up value than a Sub or Daytona in PM.

The bracelet is lovely, especially the hidden clasp, although you lose adjustability over the current Jubilee. And I can see the attractions of the DayDate; I've owned one before. But the DJ 41m with gold bezel, is very striking. At about 25% of the price.
On the wrist, to me anyway, it looks just as good. Not the same 'pride of ownership' perhaps, for key customers.

Nah not for me.

To me the feeling of wearing a DJ and a DD40 is night and day. I have both a DJ41 and multiple DD40s. I dont think I've worn my DJ in over 6 months actually.

Yeah the DJ41 is an extraordinary watch, especially on jubilee with the fluted bezel. To the average person they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a WG DD and SS DJ. But as pererpl mentioned above there is a feeling you get when wearing a DD that is indescribable. Definitely feels a lot better than the DJ41... but 3 or 4 x the price better? Tough call.

No doubt the DJ is great value when compared, esp when in TT they offer some PM dial choices like the chocolate.

Hmm...the DJ delivers a lot of bang for the buck, to be sure, but...the DD40 is in a different universe in terms of looks and feel. IMO of course.

My situation is actually reverse. All manner of DJ's have floated through my collection over the years, but the one watch I can't see ever leaving is my DD.

Honestly if your asking this question means inevitably your going to buy a DD again. I'm almost sure on that.

Just put yourself out of misery and do it. Not worth the time spent without it then once its on your wrist again you will be like "damn what took me so long". Not sure how much sentimental value your DJ has but you can use that as part payment towards the DD. I dont think you will wear it once the DD re-enters your life.

No reasoning in this argument is going to make your brain think otherwise and settle. It wont. :)

They did not make it too good, they made it as good as they could and still do. At one point Datejust was the flagship of Rolex and what the presidents and people who changed the world was wearing, Eisenhower, Churchill, the Pope, Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King and so on. Then came the Day-Date with both the day and date function. Now it was the new flagship because of the new complication. Just as Datejust took the flagship status away from Oyster Perpetual, the new and more advanced Day-Date did this to Datejust. Now that a day function is not very impressive they keep the Day-Date as the flagship by only offering it in precious metal and making the president bracelet exclusive for Day-Date. Had they offered Datejust in full precious metal I think some would go Datejust over Day-Date, and had they offered Oyster Perpetual in full precious metal I think some would even choose that over both Datejust and Day-Date. Just my two cents. Choose what ever feels right for you

⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ Nailed it! These gentlemen expressed my feelings exactly! The DD or most PM, (WG, Platinum) is for wearers enjoyment, feelings, sense of pride, etc...
Most folks don’t notice your watch anyway...99% of the people who do see/notice, won’t have a clue whether it’s a platinum or WG watch. Enjoy your watches for YOU! .....MY .02

I don’t think people who are buying DDs in general would consider the DJ to be a substitute. I have both a DD40 and DJ2, in no way would I consider the steel (and WG) DJ an alternative to the solid gold DD, it’s just a totally different item.

DD is for sure beautiful but to me the huge price difference doesn’t justify it!
Now I understand that DJ doesn’t come in all PM and that would be the edge DD has on DJ

Glengarry glenn ross...
Saw the day date and was hooked more than the gold but because of the president bracelet.
Something visually stunning about it.

I agree with the OP. The Datejust on jubilee with fluted bezel and a diamond dial has more wrist presence and flash over the President . To an average person that DJ configuration will get more looks then say a white gold President. Can you compare the two? No. The DD is miles above a DJ in prestige alone. But to me the DJ offers the most bang for the buck in the Rolex line. I know some say the sub. But a sub is a sub. The DJ 41 looks a lot more then what it is.

i agree, i have that exact kind of dj and i love how flashy it is but at the same time its a perfect daily for me. definitely a lot of bang for your buck, but nothing beats a yg president at the end of the day for flashiness imo (maybe the yg bluesy)

Your right 100 percent. But I think the OP is saying he can’t justify paying 4x the amount on a DD when the DJ41 has as much if not more wrist presence. I have a DD 36 that was gifted to me. I don’t wear it because it’s too small for my wrist. But I took it to Vegas with my DJ ll rhodium diamond dial and my DJ ll got all the complements and the DD got none. I had a black fluted DJ41 jubilee and got complements all the time but not as much as my DJll. I think it’s the diamond dial and larger fluted bezel. But it’s hard to beat a jubilee for wrist presence.

yeah that's true. the diamond dials look really amazing under a lot of different types of lighting, sadly its hard to actually capture in a picture though. pair that with a jubilee and it really is a lot of wrist presence

I own a blue fluted DJ2. Would prefer a jubilee bracelet, but it was not a choice when I bought it.

Have tried on DayDates and they are punching at a higher level.

The general public has no clue what I am wearing unless it’s blingy, but the only somewhat blingy watch that I have is the Bluesy.

Buy what you like. 99.9% of the public has no idea.

Pretty perceptive, because I've got form ; I had a ceramic Daytona, steel, which I believed to be very special. But then I tried a white gold sample...and promptly stopped wearing the steel sample, and now I only wear the gold Daytona, which feels more substantial and pleasing.
This time, I think i'l resist the DayDate, but you may be right....

I have owned both, still own the DD. Both incredible watches, but two different animals, at least to me. The president bracelet is pure design excellence.

Two completely different watches. Both great in their own ways. Not an equitable comparison.

EASY LINK. Period.

I've owned both. Love the DJ41. Dumped the DD40 and it wasn't a choice I HAD to make.

Anyone saying " there's no comparison" is simply justifying their investment.

The DJ41 with jubilee is comfort exemplified and from 5 feet away, identical.

not everyone needs an easy link though, it just comes down to preference regarding how you like wearing your watch and wrist shape. some can't live without easy link and some don't care
