Desire vs. Opportunity
Good afternoon. Just curious. How many of your watch purchases were drawn from a deliberate desire for a specific watch vs. an "opportunity" from an AD to buy a watch that you didn't even know you wanted?
For me, it's one of both. I was drawn to the Hulk as soon as I saw it and that became my focus until I was lucky enough to get my hands on one. A few months later, an "opportunity" presented itself when my AD called and offered the 2-tone CHNR. I was skeptical of the two-tone thing until I tried this bad boy on. |

I brought more than 10 new, all by desire, none of them unplanned.

I've had a few unplanned I'll be honest...... I was offered the SD43 out of the blue and as I have the DSSD I wasn't sure about it. Once I tried it on... you know the rest.....
By the same token I have declined a white dial SS SkyD because I knew I would just flip it in a few years. I'm getting older and learning that buying something that is on sale or rare and not because you need or want it is no bargain.......

My SD43 was opportunity. My first look at it left me thinking it didn’t wear well. Seeing one at my AD again and really looking at it much more closely convinced me. As it turns out, I love it. I fear it will make my subs obsolete.

My first Rolex is the BLNR and it was just sitting in the showcase while I was looking around to get the SD 43.

Mostly desired, but I have purchased a couple of vintage opportunities along the way. Rolex is so recognizable, it is hard to find a "great deal" but every once and a while once a "good deal" comes along.

Early on it was a bit of both as I was learning. Now its strictly desire.

I've never bought anything I didn't want, just because an opportunity arose. Although the Z-Blue was an impulse walk in after I saw it on display. Once on, I didn't want to take it off. My three other Rolex were planned and went pretty much according to plan. I have come face to face with a black Sub date, TT GMT and a platinum/blue YM which I gave serious thought to. They were all beautiful watches and mouth watering prospects, but I couldn't see the point.
There are three more models that I will buy if I ever get an opportunity. I doubt I will ever see two of them. The third is a possible but not with the present supply situation. |

I guess it depends on your thoughts and watch collecting philosophy. There are 14 watches I want. I have 5 and I’m working my way towards the rest. So for me it’s all about fulfilling my desire.

Good question! For me it was the Blnr. My AD called me to take a look after three previous purchases. I always liked it but put it out of mind because l wouldn't go grey. Now it's a keeper.
