Two tone showdown

Hi all, I'm on the hunt for my first (and maybe only) Rolex and have narrowed things down to two watches of about the same price: the two tone DJ 41 with champagne dial, or the two-tone sub with blue dial.

I want it to work in both casual, work and dressier settings and function essentially as an everyday watch (which is weekend wear and daily at work, where business casual to suits is the usual). I know the DJ will work with pretty well anything and I am drawn to it as it's what I've long seen as THE Rolex (my father has the same one), but the two tone sub is certainly an eye catcher and I think overall the style is more in sync with my personal style at current. I do wonder if the sub bold blue dial will hold up across occasions, or if it's a bit more restricting (e.g. clashing with certain colors or not looking quite right with certain suit combos).

In car terms, I'm seeing the DJ as the Rolls Royce (elegant, sophisticated, drives you to work, drives you to the country club, drives you to your helicopter or a night on the town), and the blue sub as the Lambo (flair, eye catching, drive you on a night out or on vacation but something you don't necessarily put a lot of miles on).

If anyone has any photos of their DJ 41 or two tone sub pulling through in a variety of outfit occasions, that would be very helpful! :)

Good luck with your decision. I own a TT blue sub and at first thought it might not work with some colors/outfits. The only colour I found it does not work well with is red. It goes excellent of course with blue, and looks great with browns, blacks, purples and even greens. White of course is no problem. So I would say unless you wear a lot of red, I wouldn't worry about the versatility. A few pics of mine with some different colors. Good luck.

I don't own either but imagine the DJ more versatile. You could wear it dressed down but I think a blue TT with a black suit and white shirt (say for an important meeting or interview) would not look so great.

That said for 95% of my usage I would take the blue sub. Depends if you need one watch to do absolutely everything. If it were me I would buy the sub and a cheaper dress watch (Seiko presage perhaps for a cheaper option).

I own both. I’d keep the Sub over the Dj41. The jubilee bracelet on my Dj is amazing though. The fit and feeling is great.

You need to try them on. They look and feel very different. Most people on TRF will recommend the sport models over the DJ. But the DJ is Rolex’s best selling model and very iconic with the fluted bezel. I know you are asking about the champagne dial- I chose the Wimbledon dial (it makes it a little sportier in my opinion). Happy hunting.

Hi: Welcome to TRF, it's the last word in watch forum! I've replied below and want to pint out: I'm *not* speaking for anyone except myself. The quoted material are just generalizations of comments I've read before. Obviously, members will come along with their remarks and you'll have some very informed information for your research.

Your question is a variation of a frequently asked query "Will the Blue TT work with...." and here's how ut usually pans out:

The guys that presently own Bluesys will say: "It works with everything and all occasions, go for it." (It doesn't, but that's it's up to the wearer.)

The guys that love 'em and / or plan to buyl one will echo that sentiment.

The folks that kinda' like them but have reservations about it's flexibility or the two tone aspect will adivse something like: "It's a nice watch, but....." and will go on to point out their reservations, issues, etc. but will almost always say how much they like the dial, it's iconic place in Rolex history, etc.

People that dislike the Blue Sub will simply and democratically say: "It's not to my taste, cup of tea, not a two-tone guy, ...." Usually, will compliment the dial or popularity.

Last, the people who owned one but didn't like it or 'bond' with it will offer: "Beautiful watch, but it wasn't for me. Great piece but too flashy, attracted too much attention, was concerned co-workers would notice...." and many variations of the above.

My story is that I wanted one for over 20 years. I bought it and was dazzled and delighted....for about a week! It was heavier that I preferred and I've been wearing Datejusts for years. Weight is never an issue for me. It *did* attract attention which was fun the first couple of times. (The inevitable "Is it real and/or what did it cost?" That wasn't fun & got old fast.) The PCL's Polished Center,Links which I knew were prone to scratches got: you know it, fine scratches almost right out of the box. Usually I don't care about the small stuff but on this particular reference it looked awful. That's a personal issue YMMV.

In short, I realised my tastes had changed and it wasn't for me. I reluctantly traded it in but to this day I still LOVE the dial. It's an outstanding piece - one of Rolex's crowning designs.

Remember, what I didn't like may not bother you at all. I hope whatever you decide you end up with a piece you'll be happy wearing and enjoying.

Well, unless you have a Rolls or a Lambo, you can't get any of them...

If you are new to Rolex, mind you that what you've thought of being THE Rolex (TT DJ), might actually change for you after you've spent some time in getting to know the whole line up. Having said that, you should just think of them as to which one you'd love most to have, as all models are special and there is no such thing as THE Rolex.

The Sub Date TT LB would work great pretty much every time, not so well, as mentioned before, with a black suit ceremonial/formal attire. And as you have already acknowledged, is one of the most flamboyant in the line up.

I'd get a TT LB without any hesitation, but it's up to your preferences.

The blue TT subbis an iconic watch and along with the TT yellow gold gmt are the quintessential best looking TT sport watches and will hold there value if you get tired of it in 5 years and want to trade. The tt datejust not so much , more of a big ladies watch in my opinion, trade value not so good either. Sorry datejust owners , my wife has 3 in different sizes and it looks great on her

Your gut is telling you sub. Go with your gut.

Don't overthink it with a bunch of nonsense about will it go with my shirt and so on.

The sub is one of the best looking watches in the line up and one of my all time favorites, so it's a no brainer for me.

Both are great looking watches! I’d go with whichever one fits your lifestyle best....and the one you’ll enjoy looking at the most when you look at your wrist.

I’ve owned both Subs with the blue being a bit flashy so I stayed with the black. I also have a BLNR that gets all the wrist time. Go for what catches your eye and enjoy the journey

I owned two TT bluesys but moved on to a mix of full gold and ss pieces. While the TT is a versatile watch cant get around that its a cheap way of getting into precious metal. In my opinion... if you want gold, go full gold. Else stick to steel.

Sub LB; although either will be a great watch for you. I prefer Subs. DJ too small for me historically, but I have not tried the larger versions. I rotate regularly but the Sub LB is versatile for me. Feel comfortable wearing in most situations.

LOL, I had full gold Daytona. Sold it and bought TT Daytona. Doesn’t mean I can’t afford it.

Go DJ. More versatile. If you have a sports watch itch pick up a Tudor BB or Omega SMP as a 2nd watch.

I am not a huge fan of TT, but if you have to have it, then the sub is far and away my favorite. It is a classic.
