Explorer 1 or SubND or both?

Hi all,

I have an opportunity to pick up a Sub ND today. However, I currently have a Speedmaster and an Explorer 1. Would the Sub ND and Explorer 1 be redundant? I can’t seem to get over the look of a date on the Sub, but it would be more functional than having two time only Rolex pieces.

At the same time, my heart wants both haha.

Any help is appreciated!

Go with both, I don't care about a date function personally.

Get the sub and keep the Exp 1. I have a Exp 1 (114270) and No Date Sub (114060) and I love them both. They are very different watches and can easily live within the same collection. I had a Hulk and while I loved the color, I wasn't a fan of the date. I sold it and grabbed a 114060, zero regrets.

I would absolutely pick up the Sub ND. It deserves to be in any collection, even for a little while. Wear it for a few months and see how that works with the Explorer.

I personally like having a date and most of the time when I wear my Explorer I I'm annoyed it doesn't have it. But if no date doesn't bother you, go for it. Yhey are 2 totally different watches so having both wouldn't be redundant. Or try to find a Sea-Dweller 4000, best of both worlds with the date and no cyclops.

You won’t regret picking up the Sub to complement the Explorer 1. In my eyes the two have very different end uses.

The Submariner (I have two) and Explorer (I have one) are very different watches IMO. Surely, if you've got an opportunity and the means to get a 114060, I suggest you do it. It's an awesome timepiece with lots of wrist presence and a beautiful, symmetrical dial. Your phone will continue doing a fine job of telling you the date.

As a complete newbie, I would give my gut reaction as "both" if you can afford them, but the ND Sub if only one.

But I like simplicity. I think the ND sub is the epitome of a classic watch. If I could lay my hands on one that is what I would go for every time (now I know a little more about these things than I did when I bought my first watch).

Don't really care about dates personally. Good if there, fine if not.

I'm also a Sub "No-Date" guy and a Speedy. Almost chose the Explorer I over the Sub but I know 100% that I made the right decision going with the Sub. As much as I like the Explorer, I just don't think it'll end up in my collection.

I can't really justify having 3 black sports watches with no date. I've decided to build up my collection with complimentary pieces rather than just going for watches that I like. My next watch has to have a pop of color and a date function. Explorer II fills that niche quite nicely with an added GMT function to boot.

Date wasn't really an option for me on the Sub. The aesthetic perfection of a "No-Date" Sub was never going to be beat by the date function. Not to mention my love of Bond probably instilled a bias into me. I may have considered a date if they offered one without the cyclops (no, not the SD4K too thick and way too expensive after being discontinued). Also, you'll see Subs all the time but the "No-Date" is a rare beast indeed and a mark of an enthusiast usually.

I think you did the right thing. I currently own an Explorer 1, and have an order for the 114060. Funny thing, I got a call from my AD today, offering me the chance to get the 116610LN Submariner Date. But I decided to wait until they get a 114060. I don't regret turning down the Sub Date, though.

I think the Explorer 1 and 114060 are a great combination.

Well, I'm in Vancouver as well. So your call for the 114060 gives me some hope that I may get mine fairly soon.

Based on this picture, it looks like the dial on the Exp1 is BIGGER than the Sub? Are my eyes deceiving me? I have not been able to see either in the wild (thanks to the SS shortage), let along side by side. I always imagined that the Sub dial would be bigger since it's 40mm. Does the 40mm size include the ceramic bezel?

Yes 40mm includes bezel, so in reality Sub dial is smaller than Explorer. Also, Explorer has better movement than Sub here! (3132 vs 3130)

I agree to keep both. I had both incl Exp MK II. Ended up with the SD4K flipping the ND Sub. Both watches are awesome and timeless. Actually find I wear my Exp more often with my BB 58 also getting a lot of wrist time.
