Talking Watches with John Mayer II

In my morning news checks and TRF perusing, I saw that Hodinkee uploaded a second Talking Watches with John Mayer, a five year update to the original.

If interested, you can watch here.

Just finished watching. Just as much of a treat as the first one.

The AD salesman he refers to at the NYC boutique is the guy who got me my Daytona. He is an amazing guy!

“I don’t want the money. I want the watches. That’s how I know I’m a collector.”

Seems like he’d be a cool guy just to hang out with for an evening.

Thanks for sharing the video.

Watched this morning as well, very cool and laid back and honest interview. I like his passion for watches. He would be fun to have a beer with.

I like how he mentioned he had to call his business manager to "approval" to buy some of the watches. Sounds like he has his head on straight for someone in the lime light.

I found it interesting he mentioned being priced out of the purchases if he were to buy them now, vs when we acquired them.

He has a great collection. Despite paying lip service to "It doesn't matter what your collection costs" I find him and Clymer a bit snobbish. Especially describing a 5164a as a "short-cut" to building a collection

Just as fine wine is still an alcoholic beverage, "serious watch collecting" is still conspicuous consumption. Some people choose to learn about the history, movement, finishing, etc. -- if they enjoy that, more power to them.

If people want to buy luxury watches (or get drunk, for that matter), I'm not hating. But be upfront about it, don't cloak it in pretension

Thanks for sharing the video.
At the conclusion of evening you then buy a $35k watch. Sounds like an expensive hang to me!

Fun 20min of awesome watches in that video...not sure which one I coveted more.,

I’m game. Maybe there’s a “hanging with Mr. JC Mayer” discount from the AD?
