Grand Seiko Snowflake SBGA211

Just got one! I have been intrigued with Grand Seiko lately, took me a little while to realize the Snowflake is one of their most popular watches, and found an appealing offer on ebay. It arrived a few days ago and I am delighted so far with the watch and the deal.

A little background: My tastes were not yet developed a few years ago wehn I visited a local shop who carried Grand Seiko. I was very new to the game, was not used to today's watch sizes, and had reservations about the size. While I always liked watches, this kind of top line, good stuff was new to me. They offered me a Snowflake, but I had no idea what it was, couldn't really appreciate it, and instead, went for the cheaper SBGA001. This dealer offered some nice discounts too.

My head was spinning with different watches coming and going (still fun but can be problematic), and it didn't get any wrist time. I sold it, promptly losing plenty. One of the issues to me was the size and also admittedly, an undeveloped taste and appreciation of what Grand Seiko is all about.

Maybe things just take some time, but I certainly appreciate the Grand Seiko and the Snowflake now.

I have a big wrist and while the Snowflake's diameter is 41mm, it seems to wear smaller. The bezel and case are of course part of the diameter, the face is not all crystal. The power reserve sub dial also balances out the face just right. The 12.5mm thickness seems very proportionate to the diameter.

Looks aren't everything, of course the Spring Drive is considered a technological marvel.

I think I now finally "get it". The Snowflake is certainly a fantastic watch.

Great watches and taste does change over time. I have a Grand Seiko after much research and I could not be more pleased. As I learn more about the brand and try on other models I will surely add to my collection.
