Does anybody know when Rolex started printing the nomenclature on the Sea-Dweller caseback, verses the older 16660 which had the caseback lettering recessed & then painted?

Did Rolex ever use the recessed engraving/stamping on the 16600 caseback? I think I remember seeing pictures of older 16600's w/ the recessed lettering, but cannot seem to find the post. If the letters were recessed at some point, does anybody know what serial prefix switched to the printed-only caseback?

Not sure what you mean by printing. When I had my F serial16600 caseback engraved the engraver told me that the Rolex writing on the back was "acid etched".

I think the SD has beel like that since it came out. I friend of mine has double red one and it is engraved..

Acid etched is probably a better description than printed. But that's what I'm talking about, verses the 16660, which is engraved/machined/cast, or somehow recessed into the caseback. In some pictures of early 16600's (U serial or possible A serial), the caseback looks to be engraved verses acid etched. I'm just wondering if this is true, or it just looks that way in the pictures.
