My setup's seriously low-tech by today's standards - I've got a Nokia 8310 and a Palm Tungsten T. Both have worked fine for years and I don't have any use for the newfangled features.

I used to use a Kyocera 7135 Smartphone, but recently swithed to a Treo 700w. My service has always been with Verizon.

I like the Treo better than the Blackberry because it uses the Windows Mobile OS, which means I have Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I can read and edit documents on the phone (not that I would do any heavy duty editing, but in a pinch, I can leave the laptop at home and just travel with the 700w.

E-mail is pull technology, which means the phone has to periodically contact the network server and pull down e-mails, but mine is set to do that every 10 minutes. I don't need more frequent updates than that.

Internet access is broadband and usually works very well as long as it's within an EVDO service area (which is most major metro regions).

You know... you don't need to buy Windows Mobile OS to get Office application.
Palm OS comes with Documents To Go, which is the Palm counterpart of Office, and the Symbian OS devices (such as the Nokia 9000 series) also come with their own version of Office so you can edit .doc, .xls and .ppt files.

I have been traveling around US for the past few weeks doing wireless data classes... Basically, I am training our sales force on how to use PDAs, Smartphones and Modem cards.

Those things are faster and faster by the day. It is insane when you think that the average PDA today is MUCH FASTER than the computer that NASA used to put Neil Armstrong and Apollo XI on the Moon...

I rarely use my PDA anymore. I used to use it mainly for a program called Target Plot that allows you to plot where your arrows hit and generate statistics about your shooting - great software for archery or any other shooting sport - developed in Australia http://www.targetplot.com.au/targplot.htm.

For a phone, I use a very old Samsung phone that I received as an Athlete's Phone for national team members. Sponsored by Athlete'sCAN, an organization that provides assistance to ahtletes in Canada, the phone was free and all the services were free (my free service has run out since I dropped out of competition for a while - hope to get it back!).

I mainly carry a Motorola phone for work now.......

I know that. But I wanted the Treo 700w and it came with the Windows Mobile OS. The two main problems I have with the OS is that the memory seems to fill up rather quickly and it's somewhat unstable. It's got 64 M of native memory and even though I don't have many programs on the phone (in fact I only have one - Pocket Quicken), I seem to have filled the memory. So I store all my programs now on a 1G SD card that slips into the phone.

I find I have to periodically do a soft reset because the functions hang up at times.

Palm has just come out with a 700p using the Palm OS, but since I've only had this one for a couple of months, I'm not about to switch.

I grew to like the Nokia 9300 lately.
If it would not be so butt ugly, it would probably be get more time than it gets now.
It sucks for entertainment, but when it comes to documents, web and email it is the best by far.
They keypad is huge, it does multi-tasking, has built in fax machine, and it has the same formatting as a desktop so everything looks the same.

Heck... I wrote some training manuals on a 9300 on a long flight a few weeks ago in powerpoint, then exported them to Acrobat for printing. Did all that on a PDA.
And with the built in Blackberry... it is honestly the most complete, stable and durable PDA I have ever had.
Too bad it's ugly and too bad it sucks for entertainment. If was built with email. documents and web in mind.

No crashes, and with 80 megs available memory U can just about do without a memory card.

I have a Motorola RAZR on one account, and I'm very happy with that phone. I have some fat old Motorola (like from last year) on my other account, and I don't like that one as much. I may replace that one with the Moto Q. Its PDA functions aren't good enough to replace my PDA (HP iPaq hx4700), though.

One thing that frustrates me is that there are so few high-end phones available without cameras. Due to security requirements at some facilities, I need a phone without a built-in camera. I usually just stick my T-Mobile SIM chip in my old Sony Ericsson T68i when I know I'll be visiting such a site. That has always been a great phone.

I don't use a phone much, though. Just to let my wife know I'll be late (as usual!), call my parents once a week, and order dinner on the way home from the office.

Peter, what do you like about the HP PDA functions that the Motorola Q doesn't have? I've got the Treo 700w and find it's PDA functions generally good. The two things I'm not crazy about are the Notes utility and the contacts search function. Neither of these is as good as the corresponding functions on the Palm OS.

The HP iPaq has a VGA screen -- 640x480, which allows for lots of data on the screen at once -- especially important for web browsing, and it's great for photos. The 4700 also allows lots of storage, with both CF and SD card slots. I have a 4Gb CF and a 2GB SD in it. I can carry substantial documents on it, and transfer them to other computers as needed.

I'd really like the Treo 700, but I'm disappointed that they used such a low resolution display in it (240x240).

The poor 240 by 240 resolution on the Palm700 is caused by the Windows OS.
The Palm powered version has 320 by 320.

Oh... STAY AWAY From the Moto Q!

Why do you say that, Chip? What's wrong with the Q?

The two things that I don't like about the HP are (1) no keypad; and (2) they are not available through Verizon.
