What brought about the white dial Expy II?

The 1655 had a black dial. Then they redesigned the reference circa 1984/85 and included the new GMT Master II movement with the 12 hour jump hand capability.

The first couple of years of this mid 80s design suffered from some bizzare serif font on the bezel, which was later toned down.

Was there a tool watch purpose for introducing the white dial in the 80s? Or was it just a fashion option?

IMO I would say a "tool" purpose for sure as the original Explorer-II was not a big seller and the intended purpose(cave-exploring) is much better with a white dial watch then one with a black dial.

Just the passage of time, I suppose. If you look at vintage Subs, SDs, GMTs, the dials and bezels have sometimes changed to a charcoal, gray or brownish colour. Here's a nice cream dial 16550 ...

will current white explorer II dials still mellow to a cream color. Or has Rolex found a way to stabilize dial colors?

No, that has been changed....
I wish they still did as I think it looks great
but I just can't afford a Creme Exp II as a wearer and
thats what I want a Exp II for.
