Advice: 2000 PEPSI GMT vs 2018 SUB DATE

Newbie to TRF but seeking some advice. I’ve had my eye on a 2018 excellent Sub Date (full B&P) but recently came across an excellent/mint 1999 Pepsi GMT 16710 (B, no P) for the same price from a reputable dealer.

I’m having a hard time deciding as on the one hand the sub is shiny and new, but black subs are everywhere. on the other hand the Pepsi GMT looks great and is a classic, but it’s 20 years old with an older movement, bracelet etc

Which one would you guys pick?

SubC. No question about it. Especially if you want to wear it everyday, and everywhere to show it off and enjoy its full potential. I sleep with mine on. Hardly take it off.

I've owned both and prefer the 16710. You can buy all three bezel colors, plus the faded pepsi and submariner bezels fit it too. The SubC is a great watch, but the 16710 is more special. Great everyday wearer as well.

16710....not even close. But I'm just talking about the watch itself without comparing dollar to dollar....an excellent 16710 should we well above a ceramic sub IMO in today's market.

The price ranges overlap today, but you can still get a 16710 around $10K. Lots of them are over $15K, though and I bet it will appreciate more than the SubC moving forward.

I owned one of the older Pepsi watches and there is no way that I would ever pay $10K for that watch. Back in the day I bought mine for around $2900. I know that these are all the rage now and people are losing their minds over them, but in my opinion they are just not worth that amount of money.

I'd put the money into a new Rolex with an updated, modern movement.

That's my opinion...

16710 all day long, love mine and it way more wrist time than my BLRO,BLNR or 116520. Don’t be afraid of 5 digits refs , I have basically thrown everything after my 2002 16610, dropped it xx times , worn it swimming, beat it up with weights in the gym, you name it.
It has only been serviced once in 17 years and aside from dings its in absolute perfect condition.

Also. the 16710 with black bezel is a lot like the sub but with a little splash of red in the hands. I end up wearing mine in this config most of the time and it flies under the radar. If i want to spruce things up, i switch to coke or pepsi

Does the function of the watch matter at all? Also, the two references wear totally different as well

I’m biased, but I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a 20 year old watch over a brand new sub. If you don’t know what the service history is, you’re basically hoping and praying that the previous owner(s) followed servicing guidelines. Chances are they didn’t, and you’ll have to get the watch serviced to make it have the same capabilities as the new sub. Don’t get me wrong, aesthetically speaking the 16710 is a stunner, but what’s under the hood should be just as important. Plus the idea of making your own memories with the watch is something to consider.

Pepsi, and it’s not close. I would take a hard pass on the sub as the new versions have the giant lugs and are appear quite out of proportion and for no functional reason. That Pepsi is a classic and with the bezel variations and the gmt, is actually more functional than the sub.

Tricky one - both look and wear very differently. Think I might go for the 16710 though!

As a multi watch collector holding watches for a collection and not about value, the GMT. Great heritage and fits in a rotation for any collection.

If it was my first watch and only Rolex, the Sub. More robust and versatile (color matching wise) and modern features like a better clasp.

16710, if it’s in fact excellent/mint. My definition of excellent/mint has differed markedly from others’ definition in the past.

I wouldn't swap mine. Let's put it that way. I'm not enamoured with the fat lugs, case, hands crownguards etc on the SubC. Ceramic and fancy clasp also fail to sufficiently impress whereby I can forgive aforementioned fat.

16710 - I would agree with everyone that the new sub isnt comparable to the 16710 - you will love it

I would go with the classic GMT-MASTER 16710.

Go with the 16710

The SubC is still being made, plenty of opportunity to grab one in the future. The 16710 is no longer produced, with prices increasing every year. A timeless horological icon

How is this even a question

Pepsi no question.

Saw one in person at the AD a week ago. The colors on the metal bezel pop. It’s much more stunning than the submariner IMO and I love the Sub.

I was between the same two watches and went with the 16710. More character, versatility with 3 bezel options and better proportions IMO.

Like others mentioned, you will have an easier time finding a SubC down the road. Good luck!

Here’s mine
